Planning a Birthday Party On A Budget

by Cindy on July 20, 2009

What makes my son’s birthday extra special this year?
He got his license…and I stayed under my weekly grocery budget for his party.
Somehow, I think he thinks the license is much better than the budget.

It took a lot of planning but I was able to do it. I scanned my pantry and freezers for items that I had and I planned around that. Here was the menu:

Five-Layer Mexican Dip w/ Nachos

Juicy Loosey Sliders
Grilled Chicken
BBQ Onions
Macaroni Salad
Coleslaw
Baked Beans
Tossed Salad

Watermelon
Cherries
Ice Cream Cake

Ice Tea
Bottle Water

This is what I was able to use from my pantry & freezer: Taco seasoning, Slider rolls, Celery, Ground beef, Chicken, Marinade mix, Onions, condiments, Coleslaw dressing, guacamole, all paper goods.

This is what I had to buy
: Iced tea, water, elbow macaroni, carrots, coleslaw, bagged salad, black beans, sour cream, olives, cilantro, watermelon, cherries, ice cream cake, cheese, baked bean.

As you can see, the most expense items, the meat, were already in my freezer. I really had to focus mostly on fruits, veggies and drinks. All in all it was a success and we even had leftovers which we ate for dinner tonight. Now that the party is over I can focus on the fact that I have another child on the road…YIKES!! Anyone need a party planned?!?

So I had a challenge this week. Could I have family over for my son’s birthday and still stay under budget?
I was a little nervous as I wanted to serve good food and yet not spend too much money. I have always had a habit of buying way to much food and a lot goes to waste. So, I scanned my pantry and freezer and made a mental note of the things I already had as I decided on my menu.

I have to tell you that it was a success. I stayed exactly at my budget, the food was great and I even had leftovers (more on this later) . Not all the food I bought was for the party. I still needed to get items for us to have during the week.
Here is what I bought:

The first trip was to Pathmark where I spent $25.40 for a 60% savings. I took advantage of the great sale items like the Arm & Hammer, water (needed for the party), ice cream, electrasol (don’t go out and buy these just yet…better sale is coming soon…stay tuned). As you can see I have 3 packages of Nestea. If you remember my match ups I was a bit skeptical about the sale that was advertised. Well I was right…it was too good to be true. However, I was able to get it for that price. I was at Pathmark at 7:00 am on Friday and they didn’t even have a chance to find out that it was advertised incorrectly so they had to honor it. I have been back since and there are now signs correcting the misprint. So in this case..the early bird gets the worm. Hehe!

Then I was on to ShopRite. There I spent $46.16. I picked up the Hefty bags they had/have on sale for .19¢ with coupon, the Total Cereal for .38¢ with coupon, pizza dough, deli turkey & cheese. The rest was for the party. Even though I didn’t have coupons for everything, I made sure that what I was buying was a least on sale..including the Friendly’s Ice Cream Cake which was on price plus for $2.00 off.

All together I spent $74.56 which includes my son running out (see there are advantages for him getting his driver’s license) and getting 2 can of baked bean…with a coupon of course!

1 Insert This Weekend

by Cindy on July 18, 2009

There will be only 1 insert in this weekends newspaper.

Do you still need to buy multiple newspapers?
I usually do. The times that I have not, weeks later I wished that I had. Usually when there was a great sale and I only had 1 or 2 coupons because I only bought only a couple of papers that weekend.
So I have learned my lesson and I still buy 4 papers. Or you may want to just buy the inserts. (see below)

If you don’t want to buy the newspaper and clip your own coupons you can purchase coupons through The Coupon Master. They have Sundays coupons available to purchase on Saturday.

Or purchase whole inserts (current weeks inserts are usually available to purchase on Tuesday) at Coupon Dede

Pathmark: Be On The Lookout

by Cindy on July 17, 2009

Every month Pathmark puts out a new Simply Savings Book that is filled with store coupons. You are able to stack your manufacturer coupons with these store coupons for BIG savings. Today, 7/17, starts a new book so be on the lookout when you are shopping at Pathmark this weekend.
Make sure you have the new book before you take it. The coupons are located in the back of the book and they should be dated 7/17/09 – possibly 8/14/09.

Also as always, shop for coupons while you are shopping for groceries.
Look for blinkies, tearpad, booklets. They are all over the store so keep your eyes out for them.
