Save-a-Lot food stores send me a $15.00 gift card so I could see what Save-a-Lot is all about. So today we took a ride to try it out.
I went armed with my $15 gift card, the $5 off $20 coupon they have on their website as well as a bunch of coupons I printed out from their website as well. My goal was to check out the store and see how much I could get for the $15.
I’ll start off by saying, I wish I had this store closer to me because I would definitely shop there frequently. Their prices are very good including the produce, dairy and meat department. I would say that it has a lot of similarities to Aldi in that they have their own brands as well as the fact that you have to bring your own bags. They do have a larger selection of meats, produce and dairy then Aldi does but the main canned, packaged goods area is pretty much the same. Also, the big difference between Aldi and Save-a-Lot is that Save-a-Lot takes coupons and Aldi does not. That to me is a big plus.
My total on this trip came to $26.72. I used the $5 off $20 coupon as well as various coupons printed from their website. After the $15 gift card I paid only $1.03. So if you didn’t have a gift card like I did you would have paid $16.03 for everything shown above. I would say that I definitely Saved A Lot!
If you are interested in finding out more information about Save-a-Lot you can check out their website here. Go here to find a location near you.
Have you shopped at Save-a-Lot? If so let us know what you think.
Thank you to Save-a-Lot for providing me with this opportunity to try out the store.

BUDGET CUTS
CUTTING YOUR BUDGET
ONE DOLLAR AT A TIME
Budget Cuts November/December
These are cuts that we have made this past month to help trim down our budget. Some are small and some are large but all help to trim down our monthly expenses as we save toward our debt free future.
I didn’t tackle this post during the month of November because I was really just focused on one thing. Getting Christmas in under budget. I had set a budget for myself at $500 and was determined to be at that or under budget.
Last year we had spent around $2500 for Christmas so this year was truly going to be a challenge but one that I was so focused on achieving. When I think back on previous years I can’t believe that we really spent that much money but, unfortunately, we really did. For the kids alone we had plunked down, or should I say charged, at least $500 – $600 for each one of them. Right there that is $1800. I was not going to do that again this year.
I am happy to report that our total amount spent for Christmas, including cards & postage to mail our Christmas cards was only $431.13. So, I did it and I did it under budget!!
So how did we do it? Well it really wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be. Here are some steps that we took:
- The first thing we did was cut back on the number of presents we usually give the kids. In the past we have done about 5 for each but this year we did 3 for each. So right there that was a savings and they were perfectly fine with it.
- The second thing I did was seek out all kinds of great deals almost all of which I have posted on Living Rich With Coupons. I took advantage of some 6pm deals for the girls, a Guitar Hero cash back deal on Amazon, Vera Bradley sales, SeeHere, Snapfish & VistaPrint photo deals as well as other great deals on Amazon.
- The third thing I did was use free money from places such as Swagbucks & Ebates. These really helped to reduce the cost of my presents by a lot.
Now that Christmas is over, I’m already focused on next Christmas with a goal to not pay a cent. I am already gearing up to start saving my
Swagbucks and sock away any
Ebates money I get and use that all for next Christmas. I figure if I could do what I did this year in only a matter of a few short months then it should be a breeze if I give myself a whole year.
Total savings for November & December: $2069
Savings for year: $7217 (over a 6 month time period)
How did you do this Christmas? Let us know if you scored any awesome deals or how you cut corners. Did you stay under budget?

I wasn’t going to post this because I thought it wasn’t that great a deal but then I started to check around and I realized that it really is an awesome buy. For today only you can get this Braun Flex Razor XP II Shaver for only $39.99. This sells right now at Walmart for $149.88 and they happen to be out of stock.
Shipping is only $4.99 and they will sell this until it’s gone or until the end of the day so I wouldn’t wait if you plan on getting it.

There is a great high value $2.00 coupon for Wardley Advanced Nutrition fish food. Right now you can get it anywhere from $1.89 – $8.99 depending on the kind of fish food you need. We need Betta fish food which is around $2.99 so with a $2.00 coupon it will only cost only $.99 at Petsmart. I’m hoping he likes this one because the last food we got him he didn’t like. I’m serious, he just would spit it out. Can you believe it?!? Figures I have a picky fish.
Also, available is a $3.00 coupon for Worlds Best Cat Litter. You can get a bag at PetSmart for around $8.99 so less the coupon you will only spend $5.99 per bag.
