ShopRite: New Coupons, New Deals

by Cindy on December 2, 2009 · 7 comments

With the addition of the new coupons on Coupons.com comes some better deals on this weeks Catalina deals at ShopRite. I put together some match ups with the new coupons. Remember, coupons up to $.99 are doubled for this example. If your store has a different double policy then just adjust the numbers. The good thing is the coupons are available on Smart Source as well so you don’t need 2 computers.

I just tired out the cereal, veggies, frosting etc. deal and hit a coupon roadblock. My cashier looked up at the monitor and noticed the coupons that say "do not double" were doubling. He manually took off each of the doubles making my total double what I had planned. I told him that I shop at shoprite frequently (which isn't really true I just started a few weeks ago) and all of my coupons had always been doubled (which is true), even the ones that specifically state "do not double" and that I thought the store did it as a courtesy, he called over the manager who said that if any of his employees were caught doing that they'd be fired and basically implied that I was committing fraud. I kindly told him that I'd like my coupons back and that I would keep the tomato sauce (which was free because the coupon was 1.00 and the sauce was .99). Have you ever had this happened to you before? Any suggestions would be appreciated, I'm new to coupon shopping and have never had that happen. I suppose he's right, but if the coupons don't double it ruins almost every deal :-(

Hi Michelle, I'm sorry that happened to you. I wrote a post about the Do Not Double and honestly it has nothing to do with their double coupon policy. It simply states that the manufacturer will not cover the double portion. The double part is usually considered a store coupon that the store covers the cost for.

Now, with all that said, it does depend on the store and the store manager. With ShopRite, they are all owned by different owners (or groups of them) so it really will depend on what they have decided to do. My ShopRite always doubles them (at least until this point) so I never have a problem with it. The best thing is to check with customer service and preferably the head manager. If they say they will not double, then unfortunately you are out of luck at that ShopRite.

And do not worry. There is no way you are commiting coupon fraud. It is simply a policy that the store has decided to put through.

Don't get discouraged. There is plenty of money to save.

Hi Cindy,

Wow thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I'm not sure if the coupons I used there said do not double and the cashier just didn't notice (or didn't care), or if none of them said do not double, which is why everything went through ok. I typically try to look for the cashier that looks like he/she is actually paying attention (not talking to co-workers, flirting etc) and I guess in this case it worked against me. I think I'll try the Jersey City store and wait for a while to go back to that particular store, I don't want them to think I'm trying to cheat them or anything. Thanks again for your encouragement.

My ShopRite has always doubled "Do Not Double" coupons, too, except for today! The cashier put the value of those coupons into the system manually and told me that that is what she was instructed to do. That really screwed up my use of the Cocoa Puffs and Betty Crocker Frosting coupons! If I didn't have an extremely feisty 2-year-old with me I would've questioned the manager…I'm going to make a point of visiting customer service next week to get clarification. It would definitely influence whether or not I continue to shop at that particular store. Unfortunately where I live the next closest store is A&P where they don't accept internet coupons and a Weis that tends to be pricey compared to the others.

I am so sad about all these Do Not Double issues. I am going to have to look into this further. Stay tuned.

I am totally new to this and confused. I have been shopping with coupons at shoprite. what do I need to have or do to get them to double? do I bring two of each coupon?
