Super Shopping Trip Rolling More Catalinas

by Cindy on March 7, 2010

Well you know that sometimes we, as savvy couponers, have bad outings where nothing seems to go right and sometimes we have good outings where everything seems to go exactly right.  And when that happens all is right in the world of coupons and may even lead us to a squeal or two.  This week’s trips lead me to many squeals.  And I am so going to miss the ShopRite Dollar Day Deals.

My husband and I took a drive yesterday to my hometown of Rockaway (NJ) so we could go to Aldi.  While we were there we stopped at the ShopRite in Rockaway.  My main reason for going was that they accept expired coupons.  Yes, yes I know how lucky are they?  Plus, the employees, cashiers are all so so so nice.  It almost makes me want to take the 20 minute drive every week to shop there.

I had an expired $2.00 coupon for the Nabisco 100 calorie and Crystal Light and I was able to score a super great deal with double catalinas printing out on both sets of products in one purchase.  The only reason I still had the coupons is because I’m way behind in updating my coupon binder.  But how lucky was I that I still had them. It was awesome.

Here is a break down of what I bought.  This was over a week’s time and I started with a $5.00 catalina to ShopRite and a $5.00 catalina to Pathmark.  There were 8 transactions in all and 3 of them were made in one trip.  My husband and I have it down to a science.  We pay, he takes the bags to the car while I go back in to fill my cart up.  He comes back in and we do it again.  Works like a charm.  I never do it more then 3 times in one shopping trip even when I’m at Walgreens or CVS.  I think anything more then that gets to be too much.  Three times is plenty.

Transaction #1:
ShopRite: Paid $7.00, received $9.00 in catalinas. Total groceries $22.74

Transaction #2:
ShopRite: Paid $3.00, received $9.00 in catalinas. Total groceries $28.70

Transaction #3:
Shoprite: Paid $3.00, received $9.00 in catalinas. Total groceries $28.70

Transaction #4:
ShopRite: Paid $9.95, received $17.00 in catalinas. Total groceries $46.05

Transaction #5:
ShopRite: Paid $.92, received $11.00 in catalinas. Total groceries $43.26

Transaction #6:
ShopRite: Paid $.89, received no catalinas. Total groceries $33.88

Transaction #7:
Aldi: Paid $10.26 for groceries equal to $18.00 at ShopRite

Transaction #8:
Pathmark: Paid $23.03 for $118.15 worth of groceries

Total spend out of pocket: $58.05 for $339.48 for a savings of 83%.

Now that is how to successfully roll catalinas!!

How did you do this week?

So, just curious for my own knowledge, do you do 2-3 transactions per checkout? So you have 3 checkouts? You guys are amazing…and what deals! Wish our Shop Rite took expired coupons, they are very stern here and not so nice!

@Susan Z., I never do more then 1 transaction at a time because I don’t like to hold other people up. We do a transaction and then go back through the store and gather up our next transaction worth of groceries and check out again. I will never do more then 3 of those in one trip to the store because I think it gets to be too much but that is my personal opinion. If I don’t have my husband with me I’ll go to the car myself and then go back in again.

I wish my ShopRite took expired coupons as well. Customer service is very nice at mine but the cashiers, not so nice. And there is one lady that is the head of the coupon police. :)

We did awesome here as well at shoprite. We stocked up on crystal light, borden’s cheese, and dannon yogurt for the kids. Still have $12 in catalina’s left. Can’t wait for the next dollar days! I am behind on my coupon binder as well. Had hubby helping me this morning, and even my 18 month old helped by throwing expired coupons away for me! We have a dining room table covered in coupons piles that need to go in our binder…thanks for all your help! it was a great week!
