Walgreens New Coupon Policy Published

by Cindy on August 26, 2010

Woohoo!  Way to go Walgreens.  We will be marking this day down in coupon history and it’s a happy day here on LRWC.  The long awaited Walgreens Coupon Policy is now published on their website.  And, it addresses some of the confusing and sometimes frustrating coupon acceptance policies that have gone on at Walgreens stores throughout the country.  Some of the key items I am very happy to see addressed are:

1. The use of BOGO coupons with a BOGO sale:

When items are featured in a Buy One, Get One Free promotion, up to two coupons can be used against the items being purchased, as long as the net price does not go below zero for the items being purchased.

2. A coupon for more then the amount of the item:

The coupon amount must be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied. (For example, a $5.00 coupon for a $4.99 item will result in a $4.99 coupon value).

3. The use of internet printed coupons:

Walgreens accepts valid internet/print at home coupons.

So head over here, print a copy for yourself and keep it in your coupon binder/folder/envelope.

Thank you Walgreens!!

This is great, hopefully CVS will be next.

So am I thinking correctly re #1…you would be unable to use a BOGO Q on a BOGO item…cost would be $0 for two items?

I had an experience with WAGS last week on this matter. Deodorant was BOGO and I had a BOGO manufacturer’s coupon. The front desk clerk said I couldn’t get both free and didn’t even try to see if the coupon would ring in. So after I left it kept eating me up inside so I called the store manager from the Smith’s parking lot I was headed to next. He said that he himself had never tried it and if I went in he would give it a shot. So I went back across the street, asked the original clerk to page his manager (he looked rather irritated but hey, gotta do what you gotta do) and the manager was very polite and rang up the deal just fine and I walked out 31 cents later with two deodorants.

Moral is, BOGO sales and BOGO coupons have worked for me recently.

Wow! Nice deal. Your persistence paid off nicely.

Has WAGs always allowed mulitple, yet separate transactions for the Register Rewards? I’ve been doing that, despite some grumbling from some cashiers and now the policy appears to read one RR per customer per transaction but does not address multple transactions.

Recently Walgreens has begun enforcing the ‘one manufacturer coupon per item’ in our area. If you notice your RR do say ‘manufacturer’ coupon on them and you cannot use them on an item that you have a clipped coupon for. Previously the RR were allowed to be used ‘on your next transaction’ as a Walgreens coupon. no longer, they are now Manufacturer coupons, more difficult to work out the shopping trip….they will work well w/ BOGO sale and BOGO coupons….or if you don’t have any coupons for your purchase, they r great…
As for the multiple transactions, YES, they do allow it but you need to be polite to other shoppers. I frequently get out of line and back in line. The cashier has no reason to make any grumblings or faces. You should bring it to the Managers attention. Our Walgreens loves to see us ‘couponers’ and how we manage our trips, it s a kick for them….!

nicole August 26, 2010 at 6:49 pm

yes they really need to address the RR thing. i do very little shopping at walgreens because it’s useless if i have to go back 5 times in a week to use up all those RR’s and they expire very quickly. and forget trying to make multiple transactions in my store. plus since you can’t combine them with manufacturers or walgreens monthly coupons they aren’t really much of a bargain.

Reply

Cindy August 26, 2010 at 6:52 pm

You can combine them with manufacturers or walgreens coupons. You just need to have the same amount of coupons and items in your transaction.

Reply

Stacey December 4, 2011 at 7:14 pm

You just have to find the filler items like the 35cent chocolates at the register. As long as you have any “Item” for your RR then you can use your manufacture coupons on your items and your RR on your filler

i learned the hard way today i couldnt use the RR on the same product. I used the $2 W tampons and the $5 softsoap RR to buy the same product and didnt get the register rewards the second time.

Dawn June 5, 2011 at 7:45 pm

next time return the product and repurchase it as a sepeate item. no biggie…

Savin.Maven November 24, 2011 at 8:39 pm

I also found out the hard way that if you have a RR earned from a specific product, that you cannot use that RR to purchase the same type of product in a separate transaction. I earned $4 RR buying a razor. Transaction 2 was going to be the razor refills. Couldn’t use the $4 RR from the razor transaction. But, I did earn another $4 RR for the refills.

When Walgreens had their mail-in rebate program, and when the instant coupons could be stacked with a manufacturer’s coupon on individual items, I practically lived at Walgreens, even though it was a fair distance to a store that was well-stocked. Oh, the freebies and near freebies that I brought home!

Since they’ve changed their policies, and I’ve found out how hard it is to use RRs,
I’m hardly ever there (even though they took over two large Drug Fairs close to my home.

walgreens rewards stink. what is the point of buying something when i need to buy that many other items to use all my coupons. I left the store and my entire purchase there when i had an issue with the coupons thinking they would be just like CVS extra bucks or other competitors store dollar off coupons.

Just wondering, I had a bad experience yesterday with one of the local managers…and now today I found a sign in the window that stated…ONLY ONE RR CAN BE USED PER TRANSACTION….is this nationwide…or storewide?

Reply

Mrs. Burns March 13, 2011 at 3:13 pm

I would call the main office. Put in your concern and ask if this is WALGREENS store policy? If this is not a policy, ask if a local district manager can call you back regarding your concern. Inform them what they are doing, and get that corrected. Even though it takes a little time to inquire, it is well worth it in the end when the customer is RIGHT! I had just an experience last week .. problem corrected. The DM said she was glad I called because how many other customers were told the same thing and didnt call. The manager at RA said I could not use coupon on clearance items, and I could not do multiple transactions. DM stated she was 100 pecent wrong and she was corrected on the matter. I will be there tomorrow with my coupons to buy clearanced items and do MORE than ONE transaction. Hope she is working!! hehe
So .. Call and ask, it cant hurt! Might change individual stores from making their own rules!!

Savin.Maven November 24, 2011 at 8:44 pm

I was told that you can use RR as manufacturer coupons. you cannot stack a manufactor coupon and a RR on the same item. However, if you have multiple items in a transaction, you can use as many coupons and RR as there are items in the transaction. YOu can stack a RR with a Wags coupon, but you cannot stack a RR with a manufacturer coupon on 1 item.

I’m reading these WALG posts and feel better- atleast it’s not only me! EVERYTIME I go in there (and I rotate between 3-4 tores) the cashiers are sooo nasty. Yesterday she made me EMPTY ALL my bags to ring the entire purchase over and then SLAMMED down each and every coupon I had after ringing them up. You’d think it was HER $ she was giving you. And.. as I’m a new couponer, I agree- the RR are really dumb. I now have just from this week like 14 of them totaling $24 or so dollars and I have to buy 14 items now to use them.
I’m going to CVS from now on!!!
Thanks for letting me vent! I LOVE this website- it’s amazing-thank you!!!!

check your Walmart, see if they wil take the Walgreens catalinas, they do say Manaufacturer coupons on it, it is for specific amount…? should be good at walmart & there’s lots you can get there to use them on that Walgreens doesn’t carry, (produce, meats, dairy, etc) not to menton price matching w/ any circular, so it just might be win-win?

Reply

Christina June 15, 2011 at 1:22 pm

I don’t know if this policy is listed here somewhere, but I’m new. Walmart just told me the other day that they match other store generic brands as long as they are the same size. So Hy-vee brand, Always Save, Best Choice, can all be matched for Great Value. I thought that was cool. I’ll never have to drive 30 mins to go to Sunfresh or Hen house!

Hi, So far I have been able to use all my rewards in one transaction as long as I had an item for each, I have been using mine to get Milk , eggs, stuff like that we use all the time so that I am not just hunting for extra things we don’t need to use them up.

I can’t believe so many people are having trouble at Walgreens! I absolutely looooove Walgreens! Nearly all my couponing deals center around there.
I’ve only had one problem with one cashier, but other than that, its been great!
I usually go after work, which is super late. Around 1AM, so doing many transactions is’int bad because theres no one there! One of the managers there will help me find good deals, or give me extra coupons and I think the night time cashier likes me, so he lets me do as many transactions as I want!

Luvmesumcoupons July 20, 2011 at 9:04 am

My WG will not allow you to use a coupon out of the monthly book with a manufacturers cpn. They say that because it says “manufacturers coupon” on it, that is what it is. I tried explaining that it has no address to remit to, there is only a single barcode, and the numbers on it prove they aren’t actually manufacturers coupons, but I’m just the dumb customer I guess. You would think since that since it is part of their job, that they might want to educate themselves about it. As you can tell, I have had a lot of frustration in dealing with this store. They are wrong, but it doesn’t matter because they won’t allow me to use both. So unless there is a really good deal there, I choose to shop elsewhere.

Reply

Bridgette October 20, 2011 at 12:10 pm

I work at a Walgreens, and the monthly book coupons are just like the ones in the weekly flyer. They are NOT manufacturers coupons, we don’t collect them and send them in, so you are allowed to use them along with a manufacturers coupon. I would ask to speak to the store manager or call the district manager because whoever is telling you that you cannot use both is WRONG!

Reply

cchristina July 20, 2011 at 3:26 pm

I would call a district manager about that and have them reprimanded. I’m sure he would like to know that information about that store.

I know the rule for BOGO (FREE) policy is printed but what about BOGO (50% off)? I purchased items that were BOGO (50% off) and had a coupon for BOGE (FREE). The cashier said I had to pay FULL price for the 1st item and I would get the second item for FREE BUT she adjusted the price of the free one to the 50% off value. I thought the manufacture would reimburse them for the FULL price item and the store should have charged me only for the 50% price? Can someone help? I called Customer Service and should hear from them within couple days.

Jay August 3, 2011 at 8:15 am

I purchased purchased 2 items and used a BOGO (FREE) coupon and also had a coupon for $1.00 off one. Cashier told me I could one use 1 coupon on that transaction. Is that correct??

Reply

Dawn August 5, 2011 at 9:24 am

Jay, that depends if the BOGO free coupon ‘attaches’ to both items & Store policies. There are many coupons that allow you to use 2 and one of them is BOGO. They say if you look at the barcode and spaces 10th and 11th are a ’14′, then the BOGO will attach to both items, and you cannot use a 2nd coupon. Also, individual stores can limit in their store policy how to use a BOGO coupon. They can require you to pay the shelf or sale $ on the 1st item, then the 2nd is free based on the Q….I would see the Mngr & review the store policy before leaving, You may get it corrected & teach them something….or you may learn their interpretaton of their policy, (or you may learn their Corporate phone #, lol!)

Reply

cchristina August 3, 2011 at 6:59 pm

No Jay that is not correct. The BOGO coupon is applied to the free item and the $1/1 should be applied to the other. The cashier was wrong. Doesn’t surprise me. Get familiar with the coupon policies for each store, keep it with you when you shop and don’t be afraid to pull it out and talk to a manager. I would call the manager of the store and inform him/her of the mistake.

Today I tried to get the free expo markers at Walgreens using the $2 off 2 coupon. Since the markers were $0.99 each and the two totaled to $1.98 the cashier and manager would not price adjust the coupon down to $1.98. This was at the Walgreens in Oakland.
So how exactly do you find out who the district manager is to make a complaint. I even told them the Wallgreen policy is to adjust the price of the coupon, and they still said NO! Also, they were both annoyed about the use of coupons.
I do plan to try another Walgreens tomorrow, with coupon policy in hand :)

I have written to Walgreens customer service about rr’s not printing when I use coupons and have yet to hear back. I was frustrated when none of the rr’s (should have been 5) printed because I used coupons, or so I was told. Even the items that didn’t have coupons didn’t give me the rr’s. Altought the person who helped me return everything and rering the items I didn’t have coupons for (rr’s printed then) was nice, she never offered and I didn’t ask about getting the rr’s another way (maybe in the form of a gift card, which later on another store did for me). Yet when I went back later in the week, determined to get the rr’s this time, the same store but different register printed all of them no problem. So crazy!

New to coupons I tried to do the buy 30.00 P&G products today at walgreens and get 10.00 in RR, but didn’t know it had to be 30.00 after you use your coupons. So live and learn. Really didn’t like the way walgreens handled this, they make you feel ashamed to use coupons.

I know the feeling Vicki, there are many cashiers/managers that make you feel bad but don’t get discourage there are also real nice ones that are willing to help. The p&g promotion don’t have to be $30 after coupons, I did it using coupons and I’m planning to do it again with 6 gains – $6 coupons and 2 $10 RR but using 2 fillers. This website has been very helpful to teach me how to do better with my couponing.

I work hard to make my coupons and rr go far. It does take work to figure out how to use them with coupons for almost a totally free purchase. My best deal for lots of stuff (papertowels, soup, medicines, etc.) using coupons and rr’s was a grand total of .03. Even the cashier (one of the rare nice ones) said that was the best he ever saw! I too sometimes get the feeling the chashiers resent you using coupons to get the best deals. But that too bad for them. Maybe they wish they could stretch a dollar so well. I work hard for my money and I make every penny count!

Well I ventured into Walgreen again after taking a break and sure enough on my visit this week the cashier refused my $1 off mfr coupon because the item was on sale for .99. So I went to another store with no problem. Have they changed there policy or was she just wrong? She even lectured me about the coupon. This store is just not friendly.

Reply

V October 25, 2011 at 12:42 am

She’s completely wrong. Always always have their coupon policy in hand so you can have a standoff right in the store, a friendly standoff one hopes, but it is unreal how little the cashiers understand the store coupon policy- but if they did they would be couponers too! :)

I have a question regarding the Register Rewards for Walgreens. The policy reads that a RR coupon value cannot exceed the total purchase amount. No cash back and no cash value for RR coupon. However, for manufacturer coupons, the coupon amount must be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied. So – does this mean that RR can not be adjusted like coupons can? I had a total purchase of $2.99 and a $3 RR. It was the last to be scanned and the cashier would not let me use it. Was she correct?

Reply

Marjie October 27, 2011 at 8:44 am

Yes – I think she was correct – now that I’ve given it more thought. Total purchase price cannot exceed the RR. For further purchases, I will make sure the cashier scans the RR before mfc coupons and see what happens.

I’m rather new too couponing. But from my. Experience over the last couple of months. Grocery stores is much. Easier to deal with. However I’ve never had a problem with Walgreens with my mf q’s or my rr’s. Only at cvs did they give me a hard time but it wasn’t with the ecb it was with mf q’s. I’m. Still learning aloot but yesterday at cvs I got 5 gift cards for making the $30 purchases and and got. 72 dollars worth of free items using my ecb, mf q’s and still ended up with an additional 2 american express giftcards for the ten dollars a piece and 1 dollar of ecb. Left overr. Then at my trip to walgreens yesterday I ended up with 3 1 dollar rr’s. After buying 6 bags of candy corns for 2/$3. At Vons. Supermarket I ended up with free infant enfamil stage 1 formula which is valued at $28. My baby is 8 months on the 3rd and is breastfed but hey! Someone can. Use it and it was FREE, also 2 packs glad snap and go stoorage containers a total of 10 bowls with lids for FREE after using the stores 1.99 coupon, along with my 2 $2 coupons and 1 $1 dollar catalina on any shopping trip on that same transaction I got a bottle of bleach valued at 3.79 but used a $4 catalina from gerber. Bleachn glad containers were free plus they owed me 3 cents. Grocery stores are better but drug stores are just as good if you are very strategic.

I successfully received overage at 6 walgreens stores from their CG sale and at each store I asked if this was right they told me as long as the balance is not negative it would be fine. At the last store I went to they told me I must buy 32$ worth of CG products to accept the coupons. Then I was told I have to purchase more than that to make the coupon work as it would not be accepted if this was the exact amount. The manager also told me that the concept of overage in any store not just walgreens was coupon fraud because you cannot make a company pay for you to receive other items free. when I asked him to explain he couldn’t. I politely collected my coupons and left. On closer inspection of the coupons I notice that it states if the coupon is redeemed properly, in this case for 2 covergirl face products, the retailer will be reimbursed the face value of this coupon ( 8$) plus 8 cents. Where on there does is say the amount of up to 8$? doesn’t this mean that stores cannot legally change the value of a coupon because that would be coupon fraud? it really upset me to have someone tell me I was stealing so if someone could shed some light on this I would be grateful.

hey i noticed that alot of yall are having troubles using the RR our local wags lets us purchase the 30 cent cow tails then us our MAN. coupon and u can use your RR on the same purchase . its the stores way of making the RR work and another thing our store just got the new registers. and the managers there told us if a coupon rings then bye there new policy they have to accept it . so they sometimes will ring coupons till our price is almost 0 and not even give us a chance to stop them lol. they really do try to make it as affordable as possible on us

just a thought November 13, 2011 at 2:18 am

my way around the RR, is to use a “filler” item. Something that cost a few cents. Like a pencil …. or one of there sell item that runs like 39 cents… This way the register will accept the coupon on the filler item.

Rule of thumb 5 items…. 5 coupons (this includes the store one too.)

If you have 3 itmes and 5 coupons (you will get a beep and it won’t work)

This has been my experence.

Reply

Cindy November 26, 2011 at 2:17 pm

I’ve had nothing but aggravation at my local WG. Buying “filler” items is a waste of time and money. Why do I need to waste buying things that I don’t need? Number one rule in couponing is to get things that will be used or consumed. No thanks walgreens!!! I’d rather go to cvs or rite aid!!! Not worth the aggravation of dealing with u any longer!

Reply

chris November 27, 2011 at 1:24 am

cvs and rite aid isnt worth even walking in the store.
i would rather spend on fillers with 30 cents tied up than anything . so its up 2 u but its a waste at the other stores and its more gas and time jumping places/.

Ok, confused regarding coupons and overage. I guess they mean they will reduce the coupon to the amount of the item because they don’t want to hand u cash back atthe en of the transaction (assuming that’s the only thing u purchased). However, WG has always applie overage to my other items. I dint purchase fillers , but will apply the overage to items I don’t have coupons for. The only aggravating thing about the RR to me is u only get 1 per transaction. Thats a little time consuming for everyone, because I don’t hesitate to make several transactions in a row in order not to be shorted on RR (although I do try to be respectful of customers behind me…)

Anonymus~ Same thing happened to me yesterday at my WG’s. I shopped around w/ my binder scouting deals that aren’t always advertised. I came across some colored lip balms that were clearanced @ 1.50..searching through my coupons I found $2 off ANY balm of that brand. So gathering more items I had coupons for I went to checkout. Once the cashier got to the $2 coupons they would not scan. So she calls the manager up and he proceeded to tell me that he could only give me them for free because they can’t give $ back. I politely asked him how that was fair. Seeing that I would get the lip balms @$1.50 but they would get the $2 from the manufacturers..he started to stutter and said that was there policy. So in other words they get the kick back?? I have lost it for WG’s.
