Target: Olay Cleanser Money Maker After MIR!

Want a way to use that new Olay $20 Rebate I just posted about?  Well, here is a deal at Target that you can take advantage on and score a nice little money maker plus some great Olay products.

There is a gift card deal on select P&G products.  The deal is buy 2 participating products and get a $5.00 Target Gift Card.  Some of the products included are:

  • Olay Refreshing Toner $2.84
  • Olay Gentle Foaming Wash with Aloe $3.50
  • Olay Foaming Face Wash $3.50

There are so many issues with using coupons with gift card deals at Target that you would be better off not even trying them with this deal.  Plus you can still score a money maker even without them.  Here is why:

When making a purchase with a gift card deal, the register will automatically deduct twice the value of the gift card offer and consider it a manufacturer coupon.  It is an “invisible” deduction and does not actually come off on the receipt, however it does not allow you to use coupons against it unless you fill up your cart with more mercandise.  Stupid, I know, but it’s the way it works.  So, in this case, if you purchase a face wash & a toner for a total of $6.34, the register would deduct an “invisible” $10 (twice the value of the gift card offer) so the register would beep and not be able to accept your 2 $1 coupon.  You can read more about it from Totally Target. If you have any questions let me know.

So, with that said, here are some deals you can do with the Olay Gift Card deal and the new $20 Rebate.  And remember, prices may vary from store to store so please be sure to check your prices before doing this deal.

So, either way, you have the same result however doing them in multiple transactions allows you to spend less out of pocket.

Question on this deal there is a $1/1 any one olay facial cleanser or facial moisturizer can this be used to make a sweeter deal?

    • Julie

I would think so, but I tried this tonight. My purchases were $13.50 in olay products and I used two $1 off coupons. So, even minus the $10, it still would have been $3.50 and the coupons should have been fine. However, they BOTH beeped! The manager came over and was really nice and since all I bought were four Olay products, obviously the coupons were for what I purchased. He explained that they have new software and nothing is working right! They apologized for having me wait even!

So, for the rest of my purchases this week I think I will just skip the coupons. Doesn’t seem to be worth it. He even tried putting the coupon in for 99 cents, and it didn’t work.

I read the totally target website and i’m still confused. Are you saying that the register gives you 10 dollars off when your only suppose to get a 5 dollar target gift card? I’ve never done a gift card deal before but I was under the impression that they handed you a gift card with the amount on it that you were suppose to get. What’s up with the 10 dollars mysteriously coming off?

    • Cindy

It is confusing. What is happening is that it does not actually give you the $10 off and you still get a $5 gift card. It takes away the total amount that is available to use coupons against. So, lets say this deal:

Buy 2 Pampers at $7 each and get a $5 gift card:

      2 Pampers $14 total
Your amount is $14 but the register somehow only recognizes it as being $4.00 because it sees it as being $14 – $10 (2 x $5.00 which is the amount of the gift card). But it’s still listed as $14 on your receipt as a nor. That does not change. However, now you can only use $4.00 in coupons against your order because anything over $4.00 in coupons will beep and they can not put it through manually.

      So your deal will be:
      Buy 2 Pampers $14 total
      -(2)$2/1 coupons
      Pay: $10
      Get a $5.00 gift card
      NO BEEPS!

The only way around using more in coupons is to add other items to your card. So, if you had 2 $2.50 coupons for the pampers deal I illustrated ($5 total in coupons), you would have to put a $1.00 in your cart so your coupons do not beep.

Hope that helps answer your question.

      • Michele

Thank you so much for that explanation. Now it makes perfect sense. It’s very weird that the register does that.

        • Cindy

I agree but Target has some problems with their registers that they need to address. They have really lost my interest in shopping there because of it so I’m hoping they get their act together.

          • nancy

do i need to buy more $$ of the same product to bring the total >$10 to use the coup0n, or it could be any product, for example, if i buy 2 cleansers for $6, and buy something else for $10, the total is $16, and after the hidden deduction, I still buy $6 worth of products, will i be able to use up to $6 coupons on the cleansers in this case (i’m just making this up to get an understanding of how the register works, i don’t know what coupons exist yet), or will the target register actually consider the transaction as “-$4 cleanser and $10 other stuffs”, so the coupons on cleansers will still beep because it is already at a negative number? thanks in advance

            • Cindy

Yes, you have it right. You can put anything in your cart to meet the amount. If you were buying a pair of shoes that would cover the cost of the “hidden deduction” then you can use the coupons.

              • Julie

Didn’t work for me that way! I purchased four Olay products for a total of $13.52 and tried to use two $1 off coupons. Minus the $10 (gift card amount), I still would have a balance of $3.52, but bBoth coupons beeped. The manager was able to put them through after trying many different things.

                • Cindy

Julie, because you were buying 4 you were entitled to 2 – $5 gift cards. So a total of $10 in gift cards. The register doubles the gift card amount for deducting that “invisible $20” so it thinks you are already in the negative therefore there is nothing for the coupon to grab onto.

If you are entitled to a $5 gift card then it invisibly deducts $10. If you are entitled to a $10 (or 2 $5) then it invisibly deducts $20.

Honestly, Target needs to get their registers fixed because it just should not be that way anyway. But I just wanted to clarify that is probably why you were having issues.

                  • Julie

Wow, doubles the gift card value… you wonder where they came up with that one! Thanks so much for clarifying for me.

  • Gloria

Going to vote – then off to Target!

    • Gloria

I had a problem there too. The register was deducting the (2) $5.00 gift cards off my order automatically, even though the total was still the same (computer error). But the cashier was very nice, returned the entire first order and gave me back $1.03 more than I paid! 20 minutes later and 3 cashiers later (sigh) I was off – Olay!

  • nancy

got another question, do you need to buy 2 different products to get the gift card? can i buy 2 cleansers (which is cheaper) and still get the gift card? thanks

    • Cindy

Yes you can buy 2 of the same product. I just used that example because it helped to get to the $50 easier. But you could be 2 of the toners and get the gift card as well.

  • Julie

On the olay form there is only space for 8 UPC numbers for items. Would you just attach another piece of paper with the add’l UPC’s?

    • Cindy

Yes, I’m sure you could do that. They do not give a restriction to the number of products so I don’t see why not. You could call them to double check how they would like to see it. They may say you can write it on the back or something.

  • Julie

Thanks! Also, Target now has a policy that if you use a target credit card, you automatically get 5% off of any purchase. We won’t keep a balance on a credit card, so I purchase it on the card to get the discount, and then the next day or two when I go by, go to customer service and pay the bill!

  • Rachel

If I used coupons wouldn’t I need to purchase more than 16 products to qualify for the $20 rebate after buying $50 in Olay products?

    • Cindy

The rebate is for prices before coupons.

  • Julie

Cindy, do you think there will be a problem with the rebate for buying toners? I just noticed the form said moisturizers, facial treatments, and/or facial cleansers. Do you think the toner comes under “treatments”. I just bought two, and wondering if I should buy other things instead…

    Thanks again!!!!

    • Cindy

The toners show on their website under cleansers so I don’t think you’ll have a problem. You can take a look here.

  • steph

i called olay direct. the toners are fine. so are the wet facial cloths.
if you have more than 8 upcs put them on the back and make a note there is more on the back.
also, cindy, i want to send you my trip later, when i have time. i was able to use the coupons, cause i bought other stuff. i am late for work though so i will have to explain that later.
anyway, i think it is ridiculous what target is doing has been doing etc…..
is there anyway we can all sign a letter or petition or something and tell them they are losing business and better get their act together? when i started reading blogs i went to target all the time. now i go only for really really good deals like this one. it is ridiculous and not worth it. and a scam. i mean who does these things and why?
anyway, thanks for letting me vent….

    • Cindy

Steph, first I’m excited to see your trip and it would be a great way for others to see how to get around that register gift card problem. Second, I totally agree with you. They have really lost my business because of it and I don’t post that much Target anymore unless it’s something like this. It is ridiculous and not worth the aggravation. We can find so many deals elsewhere. I can tell you that it has been all over the news over the last 6 months. Not specially this, but their coupons not coming off properly, etc. So, I’m hoping that they are working on a fix to get their registers to behave as they should.

Oh, and thanks for the info on the rebate!

  • Jason

Thanks for the post. I don’t get how the gift cards are going to be given to you though? A machine? What? 😛

    • Cindy

The cashier just activates them and gives it to you right at the register

  • Kari

Thanks so much for posting this deal. I didn’t do the money maker you suggested (although I was tempted) because i have never used the toners or face scrubs so i didn’t want to get 8 of each. I bought 3 toners @ $2.84 each, 2 facial scrubs @ $3.50 each, 3 night firming creams @ $4.78 each, 1 moisturizer with foundation $18.04, and 1 facial scrub @ $4.78. I then used a target $1.50 off 1 olay facial moisturizer and also used a coupon for a free olay ribbons body wash ($5.54 value) with purchase of olay facial moisturizer. I was able to use both coupons no problem. So my total was $57.89 and after the rebate and gift cards total out of pocket will be $5.85 plus tax. Not a money maker but still an awesome deal!! I used my gift cards towards stuff I was already planning on buying at Target.

I also bought 4 packages of Kandoo wipes and used my $1/1 so I got them for 65 cents each but used them as fillers just in case too since i am not really all that familiar with the target gift card double up thing. Thanks again!

  • Anna

I have a question about Gift cards on these deals. Do you receive actual gift cards which can be used toward the next purchase or the the value of the card is deducted from the purchase?.

    • Cindy

You receive an actual gift card to be used on your next purchase.

      • Jason

Do the cashiers just know and hand them to you?

        • Cindy

There is a notification on there register. A picture of a gift card comes up and I believe they have to scan and activate the gift card right then and there before they can continue with the rest of the transaction.

  • Annie

Cindy, on the Target Olay deal – what do you mean that this list has expired? Is the Target sale over? I did the deal last night, and now I am nervous – will it not be eligible for the rebate? Thx….

    • Cindy

Oops, no, it’s a mistake. It’s a feature on the new shopping list and I must have been playing with it. It’s not expired. No worries.

  • Rachel

I just called the Olay # for a question on my PO Box and an actual person answered the ling immediately and was VERY helpful!
