Has anyone used the “do it yourself” tax software before? I am seriously considering it this year but have never done it myself and have no knowledge/experience with the software programs available. Any suggestions/advice would be most welcome and appreciated.

Personally, I would use TaxAct online for free for your federal. It goes step by step asking you questions and filling in your info. Now for your state it is not free so I switch to the State Website and do it for free on there. If your state doesn’t have that then I would investigate another software that you can buy cheap. I live in NJ. I always don’t understand why people go to an accountant. The only time I went is when I moved from PA to NJ. It was a bit more complicated. I understand if you have lots of different things going on, but for the “average joe” doing it yourself can save you lots of $$$$$.

My husband does ours, after paying an account $300 and my husband picking up a mistake!! We use this software, very easy step by step directions. You can also call a # for help. Just taught my son last year how to do his with this program.

We have used TurboTax for 3 years and love it. It will either take you step by step if you are new or just want them to or you can explore it on your own but at the end it reminds you of places you may have looked over. I run my own business and they have a great personal/small business option that is great. I would gladly pay $40 to have it done this way. Can’t imagine paying someone $300 to do it.

Thank you so much for the feedback! I also checked the online reviews for this specific product – majority are favorable . I am going to give it a go…at this price plus using some SwagBucks credits I’m hopeful it will be worth it!

I also suggest splitting the cost with friends and family since it can be installed multiple times on different computers. Turbotax tried to do away with that a few years ago and lost a lot business to Taxcut . I think you also learn a lot about our tax system when you do your own taxes. Also keep in mind, just because you paid someone to file your taxes, YOU are still responsible for any errors not the accountant.

Also, beware when you efile, the IRS gets all the information you input into the program which is why I still mail mine in. There is no need for them to have anymore information than necessary. Makes that much easier to audit you.
