Thanks Cindy….I hope the stores have a lot of these…..I want to buy 20+……I’ll have to go on seperate days to ensure that I don’t clear the shelves……I want to donate these to the local food bank

Why would you do that if you weren’t going to use them yourself? Why soak the company who is providing a great offer?

Reply

Kim February 12, 2012 at 9:13 am

Janelle,

I am planning on doing the same. What I don’t think I will use (before the expiry date) I will also donate to a shelter/food bank. There are many people who are thankful for the items we donate.

Danielle February 12, 2012 at 9:15 am

I agree. Anytime there is a deal that will net me a cat that I know I would spend otherwise, I’m happy to get “free” stuff to donate. Someone out there will appreciate it. :) I did this with the Heinz gravy at Thanksgiving – I think I did the deal 10 times – donated LOTS of gravy and didn’t spend any more than I usually would have.

Right there with you – I got about 70 jars of babyfood from the last 2 beechnut cats over the last couple of months – longest expiration dates I could find, they were money makers (not much) for me – and then I gave them to my friend who has a 10month old and she is working p/t from home to negate child care costs that she and her husband can’t afford. I do St. Vincent’s too when there’s a lot, but I don’t go clear the shelves, I break transactions up between 3 and 4 shoprites. It’s good to be able to help others with little or no oop yourself, I think everyone should look around at people they know and realize that many of them are in need but would never say anything. When you can give them something that you tell them was free or money maker (as truth), they have no problem taking it, which they probably otherwise wouldn’t feeling like they were charity. This way it’s a gift, not “charity.”

When the company decided to create this generous offer, they didn’t intend for people to split up transactions and for one or two people to clear out the shelves so that the product could be put in a donation bin. As someone previously said, they created this generous offer so that many consumers could sample the products at a lower cost, decide they like them, and eventually decide that they are valuable enough to pay full price for them.
Even if you think you are being noble, you must realize that you are taking advantage of the company and using the generous offer in a way the company did not intend. Yay couponing, but I feel that taking advantage of the system will lead to the end of a good thing. These kind of offers will disappear if/when the retail chains take notice of what’s happening. In addition, I feel that the viewpoint of those who are defensive about it reflects an attitude of entitlement vs. an attitude of gratitude. Who will be the first to get upset when these generous offers end?

Kim D. February 13, 2012 at 10:43 am

What about the people who are not brand loyal and simply buy things because they are cheap/free? I think it’s unfair to say that people who use coupons stacked with sales are taking advantage of “Generous Offers”. Most of us do this so we can afford to feed our families, not because we’re excited to try a new flavor of water. Personally, I think it’s fantastic that there are couponers out there who actually give back to the community. There are WAY too many out there who clear shelves just because they’re greedy or want to re-sell. If you want to have a problem with certain coupon users, I think those people are the ones that should be pinpointed- not those who help to feed the hungry.

Some people like to use their hobby to help people who are less fortunate than they are. Some don’t. I really don’t get why people are so down on donating. I think it’s a good thing when people think of others and share what they have.

Reply

Carrie February 12, 2012 at 11:44 am

I think people get upset when others clear the shelves even in the name of donating because we are trying to feed our own families and many are struggling right now to get by. Many have used up their unemployment, can’t find jobs, and are struggling to keep their homes and feed their families. It’s a tough call.

Reply

Jessica February 13, 2012 at 6:59 am

I agree Carrie. It’s so frustrating when I go to the store and the items are gone after I put in the time and effort to coupon. I miss out on a lot. I just want to feed my family however, I don’t need the food bank though. I donate also but I donate at the end of the month or after the end of a 3 month period when we haven’t used a lot of extras I had originally purchased.

Reply

JE February 12, 2012 at 9:22 am

Why does it matter whether she is “soaking the company” for herself or for someone less fortunate? I would think that taking advantage of a good deal to help another person in need is a good thing. I think it is more noble to “soak the company” to help the needy than it is to help someone that can afford to pay full price for the products. These companies are getting richer and richer on the backs of hard working people who often times make only minimum wage. If the company was getting completely screwed, they wouldn’t offer the deal. I, for one, appreciate the people who take the time out of their busy lives to help others that are less fortunate–even if they clear the shelves of a product I want to buy, because at the end of the day, I realize that there are a lot of people in the world that are worse off than me.

Reply

Lady J February 12, 2012 at 9:25 am

Exactly Shop Rite doesn’t care if you consume the product yourself or donate it to someone else. They are getting you in the door, and chances are you will be something else. And with a $10 catalina – guess what? You’re going back to Shop Rite and will probably spend more than $10 than too. They move their product before it expires and get you in the door. It’s a win/win for them.

Reply

Kristine Twardy-Todd February 12, 2012 at 9:26 am

Janelle, I think it is Wonderful that you are donating to your local food pantry! I volunteer at mine and do the same whenever possible. I got some for myself this morning, and if supply is there I plan on doing the same for those less fortunate than me. I have seen homeless and needy come to our food pantry at our church all too often lately.

Reply

Lisa February 15, 2012 at 10:20 am

There isn’t anything wrong with taking advantage of a deal. You are correct, the company wouldn’t offer the deal if they didn’t want the public to be able to use it. There is something wrong with working around the rules of the deal, the company and the retail store in order to take advantage of it over and over.
In other words, if the deal allowed for 10 free products and a person wanted to donate 5 or all 10 for that matter, that’s very nice of that person. If, instead, that person decided to get 10 free products for themselves, 10 more for their kids in college, 10 more to resell on ebay, 10 more for their neighbor who just lost his job and then 10 more to donate to the food pantry…. THAT’S wrong and will hurt couponing in the long run.

Thanks for all the support everyone……I ended up buying 30 bottles mostly Lipton Naturals (only got 6 Sobe Waters)and I am definintly going back throughout the week to buy more…..Alot of the workers at the ShopRite I was at were clearing the shelves themselves to purchase these juices…….But I caught a guy restocking the shelves and asked for 30(in assorted flavors) and then told him that he might want to bring out some more and explained the deal, he went right to the back and brought out more in minutes……..Sometimes I love ShopRite…..and I love the support on this website

Went there at 10am and nothing left. There wasn’t even an empty space where the lipton singles should be. The manager was not helpful in letting me when they would re-stock either. I felt like they were hiding it because usually they are pretty well stocked on sale items. Was so disappointed… =(

Reply

bracha February 12, 2012 at 7:28 pm

kate, yeah, i was there about 11 and nothing in site. apparently, they’re stocked in the mini fridges by the register, so I highly doubt there will be tons out… one person told me they’re getting more in monday, the other person tuesday.
hey, first time i’m meeting a LRWC Brooklyn Shoprite Shopper! HI!!!

If my total comes to 9.97 will the cat still print?

Reply

Lady J February 12, 2012 at 9:30 am

I don’t know. Shop Rite isn’t CVS. I’m leaning towards it actually needing to be $10. If it doesn’t print and you go to customer service – that’s what they’ll tell you.

Reply

Kim February 12, 2012 at 12:43 pm

I work for a ShopRite here in CT, and yes it has to be $10 for the cat to spit out. Even if it was $9.99 it won’t trigger the cat to print out. Sometimes if you are nice and go to the customer service desk if you’re pennies away sometimes they’ll print it out for you. I know for my regulars who are like max 15 cents away I will print a cat out for them, all depends on the customer service rep you get.

Reply

Terry February 12, 2012 at 9:21 am

yes! I did it this morning. my shoprite frowns on breaking up transactions, so I bought 10, went out to my car and came back in and did another! I used my $10 catalina and only paid .70 cents. It printed another $10 catalina!! :)

Reply

Tammy February 12, 2012 at 9:28 am

Ok thank you! That was what I had in mind also, because sometimes they are quirky about that in my store too, just depends on the day!

Reply

Lady J February 12, 2012 at 9:33 am

My S/R just requires that you take your 2nd transaction to another register. I think that’s fair to those that are in line behind you.

Paramus NJ is already down to just some diet liptons. I managed to scrounge up 8 of them.

My shop rite lets u do up to 3 transactions as long as they ate different items.so i did the lipton drinks payed $10 & got ten dollar cat.then i payed for 10 sobe waters with the $10 cat from the first order.

I know it’s a bit of a drive, but the Shoprite in Bloomfield (Brookdale) has TONS of Sobe waters. I never see a lot of couponers there at all. It’s the SR right off of Route 3. I did it twice (two transactions) and worked out fine. The cashier did not care that I had two separate orders. I split all of my non-food items into one transaction (with 10 waters) and all of my food items in another transaction (with 10 waters). I used the $10.00 CAT from the first order and a $3.00 CAT from Olay to pay for my food. It was awesome, I paid $23.00 for a ton of food!

Reply

I just posted the same thing on the FB site for this. It is so rude and irritating. I only want to get enough waters for my husband when he is out doing yard work this summer. When people take advantage and shelf clear it ruins it for others.

Reply

CTS February 12, 2012 at 11:54 am

If you can’t get the deal…you can always buy the regular tea, boil up some water, throw in a bunch of tea bags (Lemon Zinger (or Raspberry) is awesome), add some sugar or equal to taste, let it cool then pour it in a pitcher or plastic bottles. It tastes A LOT better than many in the store. With Cindy’s site u can usually pick up tea bags really cheap. I never pay more than like .39 cents a box.

Just a note- The SOBE waters track for the Shop-rite family rewards. Even better, They are tracking for my ‘cents’ off gas program! I live in Middletown Ny- I know some of you guys live in my area and thought I’d let you know about the gas programs rewards part. I dont know why some people are so upset by another using their purchases for donation- I do this all the time with a local food pantry, military, and disaster relief programs….it’s going to people who need it- she be commended for doing a good thing…not slammed for it.

At the Shoprite in Eddystone Pa , you have to wait for the supervisor to come over to your register and approve the $10 catalina that you want to redeem. Very unfriendly. They limit your daily shopping trip to 2. Probably would love to catch you coming in the store the 2nd time to stop you at 1 trip.

Reply

bj February 12, 2012 at 12:53 pm

I thought Shop Rite had a limit of 4 of the same items. How did you get 40????

Reply

Rocky February 12, 2012 at 1:28 pm

Normally, for, say good Price Plus sale discounts it is a limit of 4 (usually per variety), however, this is a different type of promo deal. If you have a circular, check out the ad. It does not state limits for ANY of the products included in this deal. Plus, if you look at the prices, they aren’t really good ‘sale’ prices, so, no need to limit. The draw is in the purchase of 10. Regarding the 40, that would have been done in 4 transactions of 10 at a time in order to maximize the $10 catalinas.

Reply

Kristine Twardy-Todd February 12, 2012 at 1:31 pm

That is on Price plus prices/deals, and when that’s the case, it is 4 per variety/flavor. But not in this case.

Reply

Matthew February 12, 2012 at 7:41 pm

You don’t even need to use your PP card for these transactions….if you feel as tho you ‘are being bad’ or are ‘ being tracked’.

Merry February 12, 2012 at 9:38 pm

If you don’t use your PPC then it won’t track for your Shoprite Family Points.

Reply

Julie February 12, 2012 at 2:45 pm

Does “rolling catalina” mean that if you break your items up into different transactions, for example do 4 transactions of 10 iced teas, totaling 40 iced tea, you’ll get 4 catalinas? And you can repeat this process as many times as you want?

Reply

Mark February 12, 2012 at 3:39 pm

Rolling a cat means using the previous cat to pay and getting another cat. For example. Purchase 10 lipton tea and you get a $10 cat. You use that cat to purchase 10 more Lipton drinks and will get another $10 cat.

Reply

Julie February 12, 2012 at 4:16 pm

How many times can you do that? Is there a limit? Thanks for the information!

Reply

susan c February 12, 2012 at 6:17 pm

no limit.. as long as their done in seperate transactions…:O)

Reply

Kris February 12, 2012 at 11:43 pm

I wasn’t allowed to roll the cat at any of the 3 shoprites I went to today – major bummer…but I still have $70 in cats plus $4 from Mighty Dog, so OOP with my other coupons for all 3 stores was $77.42 and got back $74 off next order cats – so still happy. It’s not like I won’t spend $75 in 3 weeks for food shopping!

Laurie M. February 12, 2012 at 3:19 pm

Sent hubby and he came home with Sobe flavored drinks, not Sobe Lifewater. There are all kinds of flavors – pina colada, and other funky kinds. Hoping to get some of the water later if there are any left. But these did work for the catalina.

Reply

Pamela February 12, 2012 at 6:36 pm

The 20 oz Sobe drinks (with the long neck bottles) worked for the buy 10 get $10??!! WoooHoooo THANKS!!!!
The ad said ‘Lifewater’ so I didn’t think the other Sobes would produce the $10 cat, therefore didn’t buy any of the long necked bottles!

Reply

Kim February 12, 2012 at 7:52 pm

I think any of the SOBE/LIPTON that are marked $5/5 will produce the catalina. I was a bit iffy at first because the wording in the paper made it sound like only one variety and on the shelves, they only marked one or two flavors. But all in all, they should all trigger a catalina. I’ve done it twice yest and i didnt have a problem at all (although I did go to two diff Shoprites by mere coincidence!)…cant wait to go back and do some more Wednesday! Good Luck :)

This is truly a terrible promotion for the manufacturer, the store and the customers. Human nature being what it is, the store shelves will be instantly cleared, as folks will stockpile these beverages even if they don’t really need it. The average reader here will probably grab 30 or more beverages. Some will probably try to get 100 or more (perhaps justifying such glutony with the notion that they will “donate it” to some organization). How many bottles can a store possibly keep in stock?

There should always be at least some cost to buy a product, so at least that way there’s a chance for those who actually want the product to buy it. I suspect Shoprite will learn that lesson from this week’s foolishness.

Reply

Rocky February 13, 2012 at 2:44 am

Wow, Dave, strong words! But, I gotta tell you, I have this weird sense of humor, and, the first thing I thought after reading your post, was…uh, oh, he went in to get his (own) 10 free bottles and the shelves were cleared…

But, okay, back to serious, here goes – you are entitled to your opinion, but, so am I. Your comments about a ‘truly terrible promotion’, or, SR ‘learning a lesson from this foolishness’ are really a stretch because Marketing 101 will tell you that the best way to gain a new customer, or, keep the loyalty of a current one is to give something away for free. I hope you don’t really think that this was done on the fly, or, without a lot of forethought, because these types of promotions are very well planned out, in advance, and, for very calculated reasons. The manufacturers and stores know very well what they are doing – it’s called bringing in the business.

As for the shelves being instantly cleared, well, you might want to check back another day this week. Not only do stores sometimes hold back some stock to apportion it out over the week, but, hey, they even get additional shipments in, during the week, so, please, check back.

Regarding how many bottles a store can keep in stock, well, a reader on another, similar post, looked at the height and depth of the floor stack that his store had, and he calculated 7,000 bottles. And that was just the floor, not the back warehouse. Your store may not have that kind of room, mine doesn’t, either.

Regarding the average reader grabbing 30 bottles, well, I don’t know how average I am, versus the rest of LRWC land, but, yep, that’s about what I plan on grabbing. Do my family and I NEED Lipton Tea? Ahh, probably not…we could just keep drinking water as we did before I discovered this wonderful site. And sharing the crackers, or, going without, so another family member could have something to eat. Now we have some hot dogs, chicken, produce, side dishes, and, best of all, toilet paper and toothpaste (umm, free toothpaste, but, I’m not sure I should say that…oops, there’s my weird sense of humor, again!). Do you have any idea what it’s like to not have toothpaste??? It is debilitating. Not everyone is gluttonous, Dave, some people have just had horrible, terrible things happen in/to their families, one terrible thing after another, so – freebies are not just frivolous, they are like little, golden nuggets of kindness for some of us. Are there folks who will hoard 100 bottles? Sure, there are folks like that in all aspects of life.

As for those who donate them, well, check out reader Melissa’s take on that, below. I think she made her point very well. Many people subscribe to the ‘paying it forward’ theory. If you are lucky enough to have something that others don’t, be grateful and pay it forward.

So, I understand your frustration and your need to let it out. I hope, in turn, you will understand mine.

You’re right but also, Shoprite is not stupid, they know people are going to go nuts over this deal. They do these promotions to clear out old stock….we’ve already been warned by some fellow shoppers that the expiration date is approaching soon on many of these drinks…so its pretty clear to me atleast that thats one of the reasons they are trying to sell the products.

Reply

Dave February 13, 2012 at 1:52 pm

Actually, I think the folks who design these promos often ARE stupid. They don’t realize that folks will buy 10 of the $1 items, and not buy an assortment of products. If you’re not a “gamer,” you just don’t think that way.

It’s just a dumb marketing mistake. These things have been going on for years. But now with the internet, they go viral, and the shelves get cleared. I guarantee you there will be people at Shoprite and Lipton “amazed” by how many Lipton drinks they “sold” this week.

Reply

Dave February 13, 2012 at 1:58 pm

Oh, I forgot to mention — I’m sure the shelf clearers have taken anything remotely “drinkable” from the stores already. Have you tried some of these odd Sobe flavors? Many of them are truly awful or, more charitably, will appeal to a narrow audience. But, since they’re free and that’s all that’s left, even the “bad flavors” are going to get removed. Folks will take them home, try them, and then try to figure out a way to unload them. So now girl scouts and Ronald McDonald house guests are going to be drinking some rather crummy drinks the next few months!

Reply

Cindy February 13, 2012 at 2:17 pm

Dave, these are not “dumb marketing mistakes” although it might seem that way. They fully know what they are doing. Many times, promotions like this are done for any of the following reasons:
1. Raise consumer awareness of the product. Which is exactly what is happening here. Some of you didn’t even know where they were located in the store. Now your stockpile is full of them and you will offer them to family and friends who visit your house. And, they will possibly like them and buy it themselves. It’s no different then a company running a promo on facebook giving away 10,000 coupons for a free product.

2. They are overwhelmed with stock in their warehouses and are trying to quickly get rid of the, soon to expire, inventory.

3. They have a new product coming out soon and are cleaning out the inventory in order to produce the new product. They have limited shelf space at stores and can not carry too many different products without paying stores extra for space. So, if they have a new product, they need to slim down or do away with the older products

Plus, what you have to understand is, even though we, the more extreme couponers, are getting larger amounts of the product, most people are really not taking advantage of it. When I was at a different ShopRite yesterday, the store was crowded and I was looking in peoples baskets. There was no one, except one other person who happened to be a LRWC reader, that was doing the deal. No one out of hundreds of people.

So, you ask, then why are all the shelves cleared. Well, all the shelves in every store are not cleared. The store I was at yesterday had tons of sobe piled up. Some stores do not keep much stock and all it could take is one person to clear it out. That one person may be the same person that takes advantage of lots of other things in life and has done so for years regardless of the internet and things going “viral”.

With all due respect, I think you are naive if you think the folks who planned this promotion thought through the idea that customers could grab 40, 50, 60 or even 100 drinks (even 200 if they were determined) and pay nothing.

There is no market concept in which such a plan would make sense. Sure, it can make sense to give out samples, but not literally “give the store” away!

Moreover, the ability of a handful of individuals to clear the shelves defeats the marketing intention of allowing “normal” customers who might want to try a few flavors to do so. What the typical customer will experience at a Shoprite this week are empty Lipton and Sobe shelves. It’s an awful promotion. If they had made the price $1.25 bottle, it would have helped their cause tremendously.

Reply

Cindy February 13, 2012 at 10:25 pm

You are certainly entitled to your opinions and I do respect them. However, tons and tons of people are getting in on this offer so your reference to a handful of individuals clearing the shelves is not truly accurate. Many stores still have plenty of stock and from what I hear, more is being delivered.

But again, I understand and respect your opinion and I appreciate the fact that you have been able to respectfully discuss your opinion here on the site.

And, just for the record, I am far from naive when it comes to company’s marketing promotions. Let’s just say that I hear more inside information then you think.

Earlier this week I was pretty peeved at the empty shelves I found and did think 150 bottles was overkill and could “KILL” this type of promotion for the rest of us in the future……… HOWEVER, I learned something yesterday from a Shoprite manager after I told him why this stuff is flying out the door.

1. the “promotiion” is from “Pepsico” not Shoprite. So Pepsico is “giving it away” so to speak. It is obvious by the expiration dates they needed to “unload” these products. Shoprite just happened to be the store that has this “promotion”.

2.” Shoprite” doesn’t loose a thing. Every $10.00 catalina is reimbursed by “Pepsico”. So Shoprite is not “giving away” anything. The $10.00 catalina must be spent at Shoprite.

When I told him the 10 for 10 his exact words were “ooooohhhh…………….frreeeeeeeee”. Then he went on the say “This is in the weekly ad??”, “Why wasn’t I told about it?” Then he started scanning the store, then stated “This endcap should be ALL Lipton with a big sign” Then I told him about the display at Wharton Shoprite and how that was flying out the door. He then pointed to the palets of beer and said “I’m ordering a palet for that spot!” then he stated that this promotion could help increase that stores “numbers”. Which is a good thing. He also stated if it goes quickly he would order more. So I am looking forward to the palet of Lipton/Sobe and will go to pick up extra to donate.

How Shoprite chooses to allow the catalina to roll, or how many you can purchase is a YMMV situation. So I just figured I would share what I had learned.

During this promotion so far I have had BAD luck, okay luck (a store wiped clean yesterday had more on the shelves today), but have yet to come upon the “Motherload” of products others are finding. Yet, my hopes are high for midweek!

Reply

aimee February 14, 2012 at 12:17 am

In my opinion, giving these products away for free is a very inexpensive way for Pepsico to promote their products, so they are not at all losing anything. This promotion is actually good for them because it’s making a lot of people happy, therefore gaining people’s support for their products. My husband and I were able to get 20 bottles of Lipton teas/Sobe water tonight and I was thinking, Wow! that[‘s very nice of them to give us free drinks.
Companies spend tens of millions of dollars to advertise their products so giving a few thousand bottles of drinks to Shoprite customers is no big deal. There are thousands or millions of people who pay full price or sale price for these drinks so you can imagine how much money they’ve already made from those people.
Also, this promotion is boosting Shoprite’s sales because all those $10 catalina’s will only be spent at their store. I saw today’s reader’s shopping trip and she had spent her $10 cat on her family’s needs. She could have spent her $10 somewhere else but she gave her business to Shoprite and I’m pretty sure that Shoprite is pretty happy about that.

As I’m sitting in my ‘office’ reading these posts, I am sipping my free Lipton iced tea…thinking that if I need another one down the line, I’d be willing to spend a few dollars to get more. Their marketing worked.

Now multiply my instance by 10,000 people…very smart for PepsiCo.

Lori & Lisa,
I agree with you, when I go to a store and the shelves are cleared of what I am looking for, I am disappointed. That just means that I will have to be quicker to pick up a good deal.
But how can you fault someone for donating to the homeless & or needy? Or, as Lisa would call it, “Soaking the Company”? I don’t think Lipton is going to go out of business because people decided to BUY 20 or 30 or 50 teas at a time.
Personally I print & clip many coupons just because they are for free items and I donate them to the less fortunate.
Perhaps the 2 of you should take a drive thru New York City , Philadelphia or Atlantic City in the middle of the night, see how many people are poverty stricken, living in cardboard boxes. See FAMILIES just like you who couldn’t make ends meet that are living in tents. They don’t have to worry about doing yard work, not only do they not have a yard, they don’t have a roof over their head or food to feed their children.
I apologize for my rant but those comments really got under my skin. I take a LOT of time out of each and every day to chase free deals to donate to the needy and it raises my blood preasure for someone to insinuate that I’m doing something wrong.

I agree, well said. But also, to add to that, some people stockpile because it saves them money or they want to donate to the needy and I think thats great. I am one of those people. However, there are some people who buy in bulk at rock bottom prices out of neccessity. Now I do think people can go overboard with the shelf clearing and all, but there are people out there who don’t even have $20.00 a week to feed their family and rely on savvy couponing skills to make ends meet. Not everyone’s situation is the same!

Rocky,
Thank you for your thoughts. I’m glad to see that others share my views on paying it forward. I think we could all use a little help from time to time, and if you are able to help others, there’s no reason not to. Because I’m far from wealthy, the only way I’m able to do so is thru my couponing. I know that the people that I’ve been able to help are extremely grateful to receive everything I’ve donated & Cindy & this website have played a huge part in that. Thanks Cindy & Rocky!

I think the best way to make everyone happy about the hoard/donate/feed your own family is to be sensible. If you want to buy for a donation on a great deal like this, wait until later in the week when you’re pretty sure those who are buying for personal consumption had a chance to go to the store. If everyone in the LRWC took this courteous approach to coupons and great deals, we’d all be able to get what we would use for our own family and still have an opportunity to donate to great causes. I personally commit to only buying what my family needs from Sunday to Wednesday and will return later in the week to see what is left over or what rain checks I can get for donations. Please join me in this pledge so we can all have our cake and eat it too!

I’m from the NE Philly and the shoprite on the Roosevelt Blvd is my local shoprite. I was there yesterday to buy the $10 catalina deal for sobe drinks. It was my second round and I wanted to use my first $10 Catalina. However, the cashier didn’t let me use it. She told me the manager said the Catalina cannot use on the same day!! I asked her why and she said she just follow the policy in that shoprite!!!! In fact, I had so many bad experiences with this shoprite! Their management is very messed up and the people who work there do not know anything about coupons and they hate coupon shoppers. I tried to complain to the shoprite corporation and they said they cannot do anything because it’s family own. I don’t think there is any other shoprite worse than this one. If u have Internet coupons, u better not go into this SR because they need manager to approve for Internet coupons. They only accept ecoupon.com coupons and not smartsource.com or anywhere else. They don’t accept black and white print outs too because they think they are copies! Also, only one Catalina can be used in one transaction. If you have more than one catalina, you need to split ur shopping orders. This shoprite hates to give you rainchecks too. If you can’t find the item anywhere in the store and you go to customer service for rain check, you have to wait at least 10 to 15  mins because they have to call the person who are responsible for that department or they have to go look for it for you, once they confirm there are no more, they will give u a raincheck. They won’t offer you raincheck for meat or veggies, sale items which are not In the ads or still on sale next week. There is one time they asked me to come back next day because the deliver truck comes next day! I don’t know why they cannot just simply give me a raincheck! Plus, u cannot do multiple transactions for items has limits. Because the cashiers won’t allow you to do so even though you check out on other lanes. They always keep an eye on what you are doing in there and they also check ur shoprite card number to make sure you won’t buy more than one transaction for items have limits.
My friends, my co- workers and neighbors also have bad experiences with this shoprite but unfortunately, it’s the closest shoprite around our area.

I work for a ShopRite in CT. I can tell you my store implemented for this buy 10 get $10 a one catalina per customer for the promotional period. If you try to go back through you get a paper out that states “Thank you, but you’ve already qualified for this catalina” and it will not let you get another one. We’ve had the shelf clearing issue to the extreme.
As far as the needing to call the department for a rain check if you the customer cannot find it, my store does that as well. We have a lot of customers who just want the rain check because they cannot afford the item at that very moment and want to come back and get it. If we have it in stock, even if it is in the back room and they’re working on getting it out to the sales floor, we cannot give a rain check for the item because it is in fact in stock.
As for the keeping an eye on the items and what you’ve purchased, if you are not going from one line to another line to another line in the same day in my store you are good. We’ll usually let you make 2 transactions, but if we see you line skipping to make multiple transactions in one day, we will decline you and tell you to come back tomorrow so other people can have a chance to purchase these items as well.
I’m not sure about your store, but mine allows the rolling of the catalina’s. You just can’t use a catalina that came out during your transaction in your transaction, as it is for a future order. So you can split your order and use it on the next order on the same day. Even if you go to customer service there are codes that print on the cat’s and we know the date/time/store you got that cat from.

Shelves cleared at my store (Norwalk, CT) by 9 am today, of the Lipton, few Sobe left….if you like the carrot and citrus flavor. Not sure how I feel about that flavor, but will let you know. There is some Tao tea, but was not sure if its included. Good luck to everyone on this deal. For those of us where our budgets are very tight, these deals are a nice treat from the watered down, sugar filled, cheaper beverages.

I have a sizable pantry and since I started couponing(last March) I have filled it and emptied it many times. My kids come home for a visit and shop in the pantry. My son’s friends come for a visit and I know they are struggling to get by, so I fill up bags full from my pantry and make sure they take it when they leave. Last week, a friend stopped over and said her brother was really in trouble financially and has 4 kids he is trying to feed. So, I went into the “trusty” pantry and filled up several bags for my friend and her brother and helping in that small way, made me feel good. If I got it for free…because of learning to coupon, I am going to give it away.

I was in Shoprite yesterday and as I way paying, I noticed a lady behind me had a gallon of milk on the counter. I took out a free milk catalina out of my wallet and gave it to her. She was happy and so was I. Funny, the cashier asked me for a penny and as I was digging for one, that lady gave it to him for me. We smiled at each other and I said “it’s the little things isn’t it?” The little things do make a difference. We are all connected. So any way you can help someone else, you should. I can’t help but think, what would Jesus do? I know the answer…simple human kindness.

I had to go to the doctor today, and I have bronchitis…so I told my kids I have to take it easy this week. My son sent me an email today that said, “Maybe Shoprite will actually make some money this week then.” Too funny!

I have had people come over to my house and taught them what I know about couponing. I’m a “not too extreme” couponer. I generally save about 65-70%. It’s more than just a hobby. On any given day, my husband who has been at the same company for 30 years, can walk in the door and say he was let go. They call it down-sizing or re-structuring. So I learned to coupon so that we would have 5-6 months of food and sundries to get us by, should that day come. Of all the people I have taught to coupon, it’s my kids who resist it or feel they don’t have time to do it. I would love to think that I have taught them a valuable skill that they can use and pass on. I’m not going to have a full pantry forever after all!! :)

here goes what is about to be a very unpopular post…

its none of anyones business, how many they buy, for whom or why….

with that said, I once made a not so nice comment to someone on here regarding CVS and using an EBT (foodstamps)card to gain Extra Care bucks to buy other things….and if I could find that person I would apologize profusely because, they were brilliant, and now I understand why….

EBT is a great program, it helps families in need, but it only helps with food items, there is no assistance program for diapers, wipes, baby shampoo, baby wash, toilet paper, paper towels, tissues, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes or vitamins….and while couponing does help greatly in getting SOME of those items for free, it doesnt get everything and not EVERYTHING is free…but with clever use of the EBT card buying FOOD items that are normally allowed, you can sometimes gain a Catalina that can be used on anything, including the items mentioned above…So I was REALLY hoping for this deal so that I could buy the drinks with my EBT(for personal use by my family) and then using the CATS to buy some of the household necessities that EBT doesnt cover…

While I am disapointed all 3 stores within 20 min radius are cleared, I will just have to get up early and check everyday through the sale…early bird catches the worm and all

there is NO way to know if one person cleared the shelves or if 10 people did, or how many times each person got the deal, and frankly it is NONE of my business…its not my place to judge them

I am not mad at anyone for trying to take advantage of this deal, and good luck to everyone trying :)

Melissa,
Don’t act like you know me. Do you know that I was unemployed for over a year and that we lost everything and had to file bankruptcy because I did not qualify for unemployment and that I am now making 10 per hour when I was making quadruple that in my former career??????????? So please do not judge before you know the whole story. I never once said in my post that I was against donating. As a matter of fact when hurricane Irene hit here in August I took my whole stockpile and donated it to families devastated here by it. Although I struggle to make ends meet I teach my children that we still need to give and adopted a family over the holidays. We are grateful for what we have and I was just saying that people that shelf clear do not leave things for others and it is rude and not what couponing is about. My stockpile has been built by months of hard work on top of raising a family and working FT. It was not by clearing shelves on a couple of free deals. So before you accuse people of things you should really have more information.

I was able to do the Lipton deal with my husband on Sunday at Shoprite. We each bought 10 ice teas and both received a $10 catalina. Yesterday, at Shoprite in New Windsor, NY a floor manager said I couldn’t do the deal again, that it was one offer per customer per transaction, during the promotional period. We did not agree on what the flyer states. I only wanted ten more ice teas. I just got off the phone with THE manager of Shoprite and stated my case. I had to read the print to him 3 times. Finally, he said, I should be able to do the deal one time per day. I told him his managers should be able to read the fine print and know what is in the flyer and be able to talk to customers without making us feel like we are committing a robbery. I am going to go back in today, as I have not done my weekly shopping yet. We will see.

Totally understand how you feel! The managers act like they know everything but in fact, they don’t. they don’t even know what Catalina is and they don’t even know the rules. These managers push customers away because they don’t understand the more transactions we make, the more stuffs we will buy besides the freebies! Just like my case above, i cannot stand my local shoprite anymore and I’m gonna drive several miles more to go to another shoprite.

Just an FYI: I remember reading that some people said that the Paramus, NJ ShopRite did not have a good supply of the drinks. I just went to the Rochelle Park one and they had a lot of drinks left! They have a huge supply at the front of an aisle by the registers and there are some down the beverage aisle. They even have a piece of paper that says that when you buy 10 at $1 each you will get $10 back, basically telling you to do the deal!

But here is what happened to me. I had a previous $10 cat that I got from a different ShopRite to use. I did one transaction and got another $10. I went to my car, put the drinks away, and came back to do another transaction. Everything went fine both times! Then I went to the gym and I was thinking about how good Rochelle Park’s supply was, so I decided to go back to get 10 more, that was it. I found the 10 I really wanted. Had my 65cents ready (70cent tax and 5cent bag discount). I gave the cashier my coupon and it would not scan. The manager on duty was called over. First she tried to tell me that it had to be over $10 without the tax. I nicely said that I have 10 bottles and that each one cost $1. The coupon still would not scan and the manager could not override it. After what seemed like forever, she went somewhere and came back with a piece of paper. Apparently the paper said that a customer can only do the promotion ONCE! I told them that I had done the deal more than once before, even at that particular store. The piece of paper had a small paragraph (I did not read it). It looked like it was typed 3 different times, maybe it was doing to be posted by the bottles. The cashier even held the new $10 cat that had printed and made a comment about it like “And here’s another one”. Then the manager said that I would not be getting it. That is when I finally said I do not want to do the deal then and I want my $10 coupon back. I did not want to argue anything further. I already held the line up enough and I was a little embarrassed.

So, I am not sure if this happened to anyone else and I am not even totally sure if it is true that starting today at around 4:30 the promotion can only be done once.

Reply

Kristy February 14, 2012 at 7:40 pm

If you use the bag discount it brings your total before taxes below $10 which is why the coupon beeps. The manager was partly right. It didn’t have to be above $10, but it was under. You can’t use a discount for taxes. I hope this hasn’t ruined the promotion for other people, as I was going to go back again this week.

Reply

Lesley February 14, 2012 at 10:04 pm

I have received a bag discount during the promotion and the $10 coupon scanned without a problem. The two times I did it at Rochelle Park this afternoon I received a bag discount. Not sure why the coupon would not scan a third time.

Went to shoprite in Eddystone,Pa. lastnite after learning about the deal from my sister.Me and my mother both went.My mom was 1st and did the 10 for $10 deal.Catalina printed for $10 and she did 2 more deals.I was next in line and she gave me her catalina….I did a total of 7 of the 10 for $10 deals. At the end received another catalina.Tonight I went back there to use the catalina with my daughter and we both filled our carts with 5 deals. When we got to the register,I guess it was the headcashier who informed us that we were only allowed 1 deal. After arguing and a manager coming up we were aloud 2 deals. They informed us that Pepsi was upset about the situation and that people were coming in the store with several carts doing the deal and made it bad for everyone else.So now only “1 deal” is allowed!

Whenever I did the deal, I only brought up 10 at a time, walked to the car, and then walked back in. I wasn’t sure if going to the cashier with 20 or more bottles at once would work. Plus I was by myself most of the time, so it wouldn’t me like some of the bottles were for someone else. It stinks that they aren’t allowing us to do the deal more than once anymore. What did they expect when they allowed it roll? Of course people are doing to take advantage of it. I have read on here that someone did the deal 15 times, which is a lot. I only did it 3 or 4 times.

“They informed us that Pepsi was upset about the situation and that people were coming in the store with several carts doing the deal and made it bad for everyone else. So now only “1 deal” is allowed!” And why wouldn’t they be upset? This is what I would expect to happen. It seems that almost every person who posted in reply to this comment is trying to do the deal more than once, sometimes WAY more than once. That’s not what the company who provided the offer intended. It’s against the rules. It’s stealing from the company who created the offer.
The moderator can delete my comments if they choose to do so, but it doesn’t change the truth.
Someone posted above…. “What would Jesus do?”
Hard to believe that this situation is being likened to Him, but I do not believe that Jesus would steal, even to give to the poor.
I ran a coupon magazine for a few years myself. I helped local, small businesses to decide what kinds of offers to run. I always thought it was such a shame when a company decided against running a really good promotion because they had to consider the people who would take wild advantage of it.

Completely agree with you.. We have to blame ourselves only if companies stops doing this kind of promotions and coupons.. Couponing shows like they have on TLC is going to kill the couponing as we know it. BTW, I still have to do this deal as our shoprite is out of Lipton since Sunday morning.

I went to the cherry hill shop rite about 5pm last night , they were out of lipton but pretty well stocked on sobe. I did the deal 3 times & although none of my catalina coupons would scan the manager over rode the computer & gave me no problem or hassle what so ever. Does anyone know of a south jersey shop rite that does have liptons? I haven’t been able to find any all week!

Yes that is true! I work at a Shoprite in South Jersery and we are only allowing one catalina per customer, so everyone can get a fair chance of getting this deal!

I was at the Galloway shop Rite today, which was TOTALLY stocked with Lipton and so be, there were signs that stated one offer per family. I got my 10 diet Lipton peach tea that I haven’t been able to find all week and used the self check out line. The CAT printed while I was scanning my last Lipton, and I have done the deal on sobe a couple times this week. I did not use my $10 CAT coupon from my previous deal. I had a $10 gift card & 2 bag discounts, paid 60¢ tax! I’m so happy to have finally gotten my iced tea, now I can finally stop chasing this deal!

Yes this very true. I tried to roll it tonight in Sicklerville and was informed it is now being kept track on your price plus card. I was told a disclaimer was sent to all SR’s. I had done it 3 seperate times today and went to Sicklerville tonight and no cat and when I asked why it didnt print I got the 20 minute low down on what the new rule is so needless to say I got my cat back and left!!!!

I agree we took over advantage of the deal but
why didn’t Pepsi Co. (a huge company) take a closer look at deals they offered? Customers taking part of great deals is not something new.
Didn’t anyone at Pepsi Co. notice all the deal scenarios?
or did they not care at first and now Oops they do? What was their plan?
It’s 2012 and the stores flier’s always states Limit 1 or 2 or whatever offers per fam./per card but one can always do another trans. another day and now we are being told its in the system to know if u already did the 10 for 10 deal. Well then why doesn’t it always work that way? I hope things get fixed and looked at closer and we still have our deals.

But you just said that the flier’s always says “Limit 1 or 2″ so that’s the offer.

Just because “one can always” break the rules shouldn’t be factored into considering what kind of deal to give customers. That’s the same as saying… Well they can always just fill up a cart and walk out the front door without paying, so how should we adjust the offer in light of that?

They had to enforce the rules because the honor system doesn’t work.

Yes Shoprite does have a disclaimer now. We have it at our courtesy desk. Lisa you are right I don’t think Pepsi thought people were going to hoard it like they were.

Agreed, honor system doesn’t work and they Need to enforce the rules. Now hopefully those customers who never got the chance to do the deal or just the non deal customer can buy which ever drink they wanted or needed. Happy shopping!

Here’s the deal. Anyone can find the deals in the flyer on their own. I’ve been finding terrific deals on my own for 18 years. Cindy and LWRC is a magnificent help posting for us all the possibilities and scenatios, some of which could be otherwise overlooked.

Here’s the problem. This has led to incredulous bragging about how you scored over and over and over again with your deal, and how you plan to use the grab for reselling and donations. It’s no secret that businesses are monitoring this site. This deal was destined to be restricted. This will continue until we stop the bragging and the hooting.

In this situation, Cindy told us of the promotion, presented scenarios, told us of coupons available, told us that the Catalina rolls. That’s all we needed to know. We should have simply digested the info, thanked her and went shopping. Maybe come back and thank her again. That should have been the end of it.

Please, let’s learn from this. It’s OK to be excited. Just keep the over-exhuberance in check. And keep it away from these comment pages…
