Reader Question: Tips On Buying a Mattress
This reader question comes from Clover. She was wondering if anyone had any tips or recommendations on buying a new mattress.
Question:
My husband and I need a new mattress. Are there any stores that are more likely to negotiate with cash deals? What mattresses do your readers recommend? We have eliminated the Tempurpedic and SleepNumber, but advice on any others would be greatly appreciated.
Do you have any advice for Clover?

Denver Mattress Company has great deals and are the most comfortable mattresses I have ever slept on. I highly recommend them. They also have affordable pricing for premium mattresses!
When I bought my furniture I went to Raymore and Flannigan and I asked what they would do if I was paying cash? I got 12% off my order. I got my matress there that way too as well as my bedroom set, living room set and family room. I got my boys stuff from Ashley and I would never use them again. I was told 2 weeks for my order and it took over 6 weeks.
If you have a membership to either Costco or BJs, I find by far they have the best mattress prices around- great quality too. I’ve recently purchased a full size, 2 twin size and king size- you also usually have the option of purchasing a set or just a mattress depending on what you need. Keep in mind you will have to transport it yourself, or sometimes Costco.com has specials for free delivery! Good luck!
I got mine on Overstock.com. I know, who buys a mattress online? But the trick is, try them in the stores first!
I got a Queen sized, 11 inch think, Memory Foam mattress…for $300!!!!
Don’t buy a mattress until you read this or check out the video clip. You will learn a lot about what and when to buy. It’s “consumer reports”And they s so it’s always unbiased info. I wish I saw this before I paid full price for all of the mattresses that I ever purchased.

I went to Sleepy’s. I ended up paying more than I had wanted to but I needed a really good bed. I liked that they have this machine that you lay on a sample bed and it tells you what number mattress is best for you. I laid on a number of beds and really liked the Simmons Beautyrest.
Sealy pillow top I think is the BEST! I love mine!! Big lots has some great prices and they some times will wiggle on the price believe it or not. I got them to come down 30% on my TV stand.
My husband and I bought our new one at Sam’s Club. We got the king size mattress, box spring, and new bed frame for under $800. The mattress is the super pillow top, with memory foam. Very comfortable!
My husband and I love our sleep number. I am a light sleeper and always had trouble sleeping through the night. Since we got our sleep number 5 years ago, I have slept like a baby! Being able to change the settings is great. I recommend getting a king. We got a queen and though it’s plenty of room and nice to have separate sides, we realize how nice a king is when we get to stay in a hotel.
I agree on the Sleep Number. We love ours. Not sure why they would eliminate this brand. We have the king size and have been loving it for 8 years now. You can also order replacement parts for the Sleep Number.
There was a big article in our Hartford Courant recently about buying mattresses. According to that article, no matter where you buy your mattress or how much it is you should buy a really good mattress protector. Its a great investment even though they can be pricy. If you have any problems with your mattress the companies are very picky about everything. If you have spilled anything, even an itty bitty stain from whatever, they will not replace your mattress. This means if a spring pops out and the box spring is defective, if you have a tiny stain on your mattress, they will not replace it. If you buy a mattress protector, the protector company will pay to replace it. So invest in one, its worth it. My boyfriend bout a Simmons mattress at Sleepys and I think the protector was about $130.The article also mentioned Raymour and Flanigan is the only company that WILL replace the mattress set when there is a problem even if there is a stain. So that will be where I buy mine, especially when I read the other post about getting 12% off when paying cash.
I used an online site http://www.us-mattress.com/ for a recent mattress purchase. My wife and I looked at a lot of retail stores, including Macy’s and Raymour and Flannigan. Also 1800mattress.com. This site offered a great price. We upgraded to a King size mattress by Stearns and Foster (which, in my opinion, is the best) and the mattress ended up at $1185 then additional 25% off so it was just under $900. We added boxspring and a frame and it totaled less than $1100 delivered. We couldn’t be happier and I have been recommending the site to anyone looking for a bed. The clearance section of the site is pretty good and they still have the additional 25% off on some mattresses. Hope that helps. Good luck.
Like Paulette, I have a king sleep number bed (four actually). Being able to adjust the firmness of the bed is wonderful. Every night I put it on the firmest setting for a while until my back relaxes, then adjust the pressure down until I’m comfortable. I have trouble with my back and shoulders and this bed gives me the best night’s sleep.
I would say you can try this site. http://www.mattressfac.com/
they are located in fanwood, nj. they also custom make the mattress.
I bought my mattress at the Sleepy’s outlet a few years ago. I got a fantastic Kingsdown (plus mattress, boxspring, frame and cover – second the recommendation on getting the cover!) that was $2000+ for under $800. It was a floor model, thus the discount.
We bought all of our mattresses from sleepys. We really liked the mattresses there especially sterns and foster. Depending upon what you and your significant other like they will design the bed. It is great – I think its a little on the pricey side but they have a lifetime warranty and its soo comfortable.
We recently bought two twin sets at sleepys. We live in an area where there are 3-4 sleepys in a 5 mile radius. We went to one, got the price and for 2 sets the sales person wouldnt negotiate more than 10 %, cash or credit. We thanked her and left and went down the road to the next sleepy’s. She asked us what we wanted to pay for the same two sets. We told her, she said sure but that she needed approval. She called and got it and long story short we paid about 30% less than retail for the two sets. We’re happy with the sets, but our only regret was that we didnt ask for a greater discount. We learned that you shoudn’t be afraid to ask for alot. The worst thay can happen is that they say no. I also think that going on a sunday just before close might have helped too. Good luck and don’t be bashful!
Call 1800Mattres and get a price then call Sleepys and tell them you have a price from 1800Matress and they will definitely negotiate. I’ve bought matresses numerous times like this and go back and forth and they will constantly either go down in price or throw in extra pillows or something to make you buy from them, they are big competitors. I’ve called back and forth between the two companies like six times for one sale and it always is less than what they first quote
Cathy
This may have worked in the past with these 2 companies but Sleepy’s actually purchased 1800Mattress in 2009.
I bought a Pillow Top from Bob’s Discunt furniture. I don’t think they will give you a cash discount (never hurts to ask), but it isn’t as expensive as many other places are. It’s been about maybe 5 years and the mattress is still super comfortable. They do have a version of Tempurpedic there called Bob-o-pedic which is less expensive. But, from what I understand of it, if you do a lot of tossing and turning, memory foam is not for you. Good luck.
THANK YOU EVERYONE!!! There is a lot of great advice here and we really appreciate it.
