Remember: Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive 2012 – Give From Your Stockpile!
Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive – May 12, 2012
Don’t forget about the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive that is run by the National Association of Letter Carriers. Now in its 20th year, the Stamp Out Hunger effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive.
How to help:
- Collect and bag non perishable food items
- Place by your mailbox on Saturday 5/12/12
I’ve started to get my bags together of non-perishables from my stockpile! This is great timing because I’ll be moving at the end of the month! And, don’t forget, you can also find a food bank or shelter to donate to through the Coupon for a Cause page.

any type of bags or are there special bags to put the food in…like when u put the leaves out lol.
Do we just put it next to the mailbox? do we need a note or something- it sounds so weird- but great so I won’t have to lug it to a food bank!
You can use any kind of bags you want. The plastic grocery store bags are fine. Double or triple bag though, because those bags break easily. Be sure to mark the bag so that the mail carrier knows without a doubt that it’s for them. You can print up some of the logos that Cindy used above and staple them to the bags. Or, you can use a permanent marker and write in big letters. If you don’t want to haul it all back in, you have to make it really clear. It’s like Yard Sale signs. If someone writes yard sale in pencil on cardboard and put the details in small letters, you aren’t going to see it as you drive past. But if they use neon poster board with big block letters in black marker, you’ll know. This is the same thing.
If in doubt, you can always call your local post office and let them know you have stuff to put out and would like to make sure they will pick it up.
P.S. If you are afraid someone will steal it, or if the weather is bad, you could attach a note to your mailbox, to let the mail carrier know to come ring your doorbell because you have the donations inside. If you do go this route, put the flag up on your mailbox so they know to look inside – even if they don’t have mail for you. But if your mail carrier is like my parents this won’t work, because he will not get out of his truck for anything. If someone parks in front of your mailbox – no mail for you. If you get an oversized package that says “do not bend” – he origamis it into the box anyway.
I never knew they did this, but I’ll be donating in memory of my Dad, who loved every minute he was a mailman……
