New Target Coupon Policy – Addresses “like” Coupons

New Target Coupon Policy

Target has just released a new Coupon Policy.  There are just a few changes to the coupon policy.  The one item I am happy to see it the Limit of 4 Identical Coupons Per Household Per Day.  There always seemed to be inconsistencies regarding this as some stores would only allow one like Target Coupon and some would allow many.  I’m happy that there is a set policy in place for this now as it will make it easier to shop when we know what we can expect at any Target Store we shop at.

Target Coupon Policy as of June 2012

Here are some changes to the policy

1. Limit of 4 identical coupons per household, per day (unless otherwise noted on coupon)

2. Returns of items purchased using Manufacturer coupons may receive coupon value returned in the form of a Target GiftCard.

Here is an example:

Buy Pantene Shampoo $3.49
-$1/1 Pantene Manufacturer Coupon
Pay: $2.49

If you return the Pantene you will get $2.49 refunded and $1 refunded on a Target Gift Card

3. We reserve the right to accept, refuse or limit the use of any coupon.

4. We do not accept Canadian coupons in our US stores.

Thanks totallytarget!

  • I can’t believe they’ve included the Canadian bit in their policy! Too many cross border shoppers I guess, which will be me in a few months.

    • Living in Buffalo, NY, it’s funny to see all the Ontario license plates at Target each weekend. At least 1/3 of the cars. And I know that it’s a bit cliche, but the Canadian shoppers are the most polite people I’ve shared coupons with.

      • I agree! I live in Buffalo NY too & I see them all the time at the Galleria Mall. I’m always surprised how many Canadian shoppers there are here (I don’t mean this as a bad thing!) :) However, you would think with such high volume Canadian shoppers, Target stores (and other stores) relatively close to the Canadian-American boarder, the stores would think about accepting Canadian coupons.

  • This policy is ridiculous!

“2. Returns of items purchased using Manufacturer coupons may receive coupon value returned in the form of a Target GiftCard.” Soooooo they get the $1.oo from the manufacturer AND an additional $0.08 but I have to take my money back in their gift card?

“3. We reserve the right to accept, refuse or limit the use of any coupon.” Really?!?!?! Then I reserve the right to spend my money elsewhere. I understand that people take advantage, but I have issues with this. They can refuse a coupon, just cause, anytime they want. The coupon can be valid, you can plan your trip around it, and oops, sorry, we don’t want to accept it today.

    Unreal!!!

    • Shoprite does this all the time to me. “It’s not in the picture…. Can’t take coupons for free items….. Can’t take coupons for more than the value of the item……Can’t take items unless wearing a plaid shirt on a Tuesday with a fork in your forehead.” Unreal is right. Okay, the last one was mine. ;0)

    • This is actually not ridiculous…. What is ridiculous is the fact that you were previously able to return items purchased with manufacturers coupons and get the value you paid for the item in the original tender used, plus the coupon value…. in cash.

How is it ridiculous that they are not giving you cash back? You are still receiving everything that you paid, in the original form of tender you used…. plus you are receiving the coupon value back…. to spend on anything in the store…. Basically you turned your initial coupon, that is only valid for one specified product, into a “super coupon” in the form of a gift card that you can apply to virtually any product in the store. If you ask me, the fact that this is possible is ridiculous.

As for the the right to accept, refuse or limit the use of any coupon, this will not have any have any effect on people who are utilizing coupons how they are meant to be used. You are not going to have a coupon turned down “just because.” Bottom line is that any store is in business to drive sales, and make money. By selling you items, even with coupons, stores are driving sales. This specific policy is in place to limit the ones that utilize coupons in the wrong ways. This will in fact, in the end, have benefit to not only the normal consumer, but it will also benefit the legitimate coupon user.

Currently due to coupon fraud, stores encounter an increased workload, which leads to guess what???? Increased prices….. and in case you wondering who pays the increased prices… It’s the consumer… whether or not you are using coupons.

      • I couldn’t have worded this better myself ! I absolutely agree with you that a gift card for the coupon value is like a coupon for anything else in the store. I have heard of people who do the coupon / refund just to make quick cash !! Everyone wants a quick buck . Why don’t I just buy everything in my sunday newspaper & return it on Monday and make all that “FREE” cash , I wouldn’t have to work just keep recycling coupons for money. I can’t believe how unethical some people are its just WRONG

  • but does it say limit 4 target coupons specifically.

  • The Target coupons say specifically 1 per person so you can’t use 2 of the same Target coupons in the same transaction.

  • I’m confused it says only 4 “unless otherwise noted”… Target coupons off their website say limit 1, so does that still apply? Only one target identical target coupon but 4 identical manufacturer coupons ?

  • yes, not clear is it Manufacturer or target Qs

    • It depends on the wording of each coupon – 1 target coupon allowed per item per transaction (it’s always been that way) and depending on the wording of the manufacturer coupons (some state limit 4 per transaction etc)

  • Same question as Ozzie. It just states ‘coupon’. And doesn’t specify manufacturer or Target. I’m sure there will still be arguments about it because of the vague writing. And they can just point out that they have the right to limit you anyway, so the debate becomes pointless.

  • This policy will not change how my Target it. Some target cpns say limit 1 per person & they still have the right to limit. For me this just means no more multiple transactions if I have a cpn that says “limit 4 like” bc their policy says “limit 4 like per household”. Now I can’t break my orders up.

  • You say “The one item I am happy to see it the Limit of 4 Identical Coupons Per Household Per Day. There always seemed to be inconsistencies regarding this as some stores would only allow one like Target Coupon and some would allow many. I’m happy that there is a set policy in place for this now as it will make it easier to shop when we know what we can expect at any Target Store we shop at.”

I have just printed off 2 Target coupons (1 for Lactose Free yoplait and 1 for $5 off deNIZEN Levis). Both coupons state “Limit one coupon or offer per guest”.

Their policy states “Limit of 4 identical coupons per household, per day (unless otherwise noted on coupon).”

So basically, it is one Target coupon now per shopping trip. The way you have worded your post makes it sound like they will accept 4 Target coupons which is not the case.

    • Since the Target q’s say one per customer – you can use one like Target q per customer. You would be able to use 1 YoPlait Target and 1 deizen Target. The coupon limits one of each per guest not one total per guest. Previously some cashiers would let you use 2 of each if you printed two, and some wouldn’t. Now the rule makes it clear that it is only one each.

  • Wow…#2 is interesting. Theoretically, you could use your $1/1 pantene coupon, pay $2.49, return the pantene, receive the $1 target gift card, and use it to buy finesse? Essentially, it will allow you to buy an item using any coupon you want…Target should probably re-think that one!

    • I can see people trying to cheat that breakdown as well. Say someone buys something with a high end coupon ( $5 off ) knowing they wont use the item but also knowing target with refund the coupon amount in the form of a $5 gift card, it’s basically someones intention to have Target pay them at that point.

    • Bernadette – I get your point but I must say that is pretty nice, and probably the most honest I have seen because once we buy that product, whether it gets returned or not they are sending that coupon to the MFR to be redeemed, therefore they are getting that $1 back (as in scenario above) either way so it’s kind of nice for us as customers not to lose out on a coupon if the return is for some reason beyond our control… Just hopefully not too many people use it incorrectly or they will rethink it I’m sure!

      • I agree Danielle. I had used a coupon for a Free Feria Haircolor a while back and when I got home I realized that I grabbed the wrong color! It sat under my bathroom sink for a long time before I got up the nerve to go back and ask to exchange it, since my store often just refunds the cash price onto a gift card and then you can go buy whatever. Before this policy change I would have gotten nothing back if they wouldn’t accept an even exchange because the item was paid for entirely by the coupon!

    • this part of the policy, may make it harder for people to find items. If someone has a good q, they can buy 4 of something and return it, simply to get the coupon value as a gc to go buy whatever else they really want. I think people will be going straight from the register to the return line to get the cash value of their coupon. At that point, why not accept any coupon for any item? It’s essentially what they’re doing by giving you the value on the gift card?

      • that really does seem like a stupid idea. you could go in and buy crest white strips, use a 10 dollar coupon, return it, then get a 10 dollar gift card. silly target. i just thought the coupon was wasted if you returned something… you just got what you paid for it. whoomp whoomp.

  • I’m glad they finally changed it. I mentioned awhile back this was going to happen as stores were getting Sunday morning shelf clearers. If the store would actually follow that 1 Target Q per purchase, it wouldn’t be as much of a problem. I would guess 4 Manufacturer coupons per visit but if they follow their own rules, it would only allow 1 stack which may deter people from clearing shelves.

    • the shelf clearing is one of the many reason why I perfer CVS to Wags. CVS limits on the card how many ECBs you can get, which makes it easier to find ECB items. Sure, some people have more than 1 card, put I rarely have a problem finding ECB items whereas at Wags (I have 7 by me), I always have a problem finding their items (can’t think of what they call them).

  • This still does not help the issues on their end. I don’t know if you guys know this but they can scan your coupons but not apply them to your balance. So in essence, it looks as if the coupon value is coming off, but it does not. This has happen to me 3 times that I caught and probably more that I didn’t. So if you have more than 10 coupons for various things pay attention to the coupons as they come off!

  • The target policy is ridiculous! I shopped there today, had 2 manufacturer coupons for Marie Callender meals. I bought two DIFFERENT meals and Target would only take 1 coupon. I simply returned one of the meals. During the same transaction I also purchased two different frozen Barilla Pasta meals and used two 1.00 off coupons. I was allowed to do think but not the Marie Callendars? Crazy! Wording on the coupons was identical – one coupon per purchase. I believe the manufacturer intends this to be one coupon per item. I’ll shop elsewhere. No other store in the town I live in has such an asinine policy.
