ShopRite Gift Card Catalina Deal = Up to $5 Money Maker

ShopRite Gift Card Catalina

There is a Gift Card Catalina deal at ShopRite starting tomorrow, 7/15.  It’s not as great as the last deal however, it’s still a money maker.

Next week you can buy $50 in Visa, MasterCard, iTunes or Marriott Gift Cards and get a $10 Catalina.  There is an activation fee on the Visa & MasterCard gift cards which usually run around $4.95 – $5.95 which still make this a $4 – $5 Money Maker.  And, you can usually use the gift card, which is really just a Visa or MasterCard Debit Card, to pay for your next Card.  Of course each time you will need to pay your activation fee but you will score a $10 catalina.

Here is how the deal works:

Transaction #1:
Buy 1 Visa Gift Card $50

Activation Fee: $4.95 – $5.95
Pay: as low as $54.95
Get a $10 Catalina

Transaction #2:
Buy 1 Visa Gift Card $50
Activation Fee: $4.95 – $5.95
use $50 Visa Card from transaction #1
Pay: as low as $4.95
Get a $10 Catalina

Let’s say you did this 4 times, at the end of the week you will have a $50 Visa Gift Card to use for your groceries or anything else you usually buy.  You will have spent as low as $19.80 out of pocket (on the activation fees) and have $40 in ShopRite Catalinas.

So, you can see it’s still a good deal.  Not as good as the gas card deal but still a good deal!

Catalinas are good to use between 7/29 – 8/11.

Thanks Linda & Hanna!

  • Not Crazy about the Activation fee………………I’ll wait till the next Gift card promotion- Alot of Work for few rewards

  • every grocery store i’ve ever worked in, as well as each retail store, will not allow you to buy a gift card with another gift card. i did once, about 10 years ago, and got suspended for 3 days without pay for violating store policy.

    • I just bought 2 $100 Visa gift cards at Giant the other day and I paid for the 2nd one with the first one with no problem, I guess it depends on the store.

    • The card is a visa card, not a store gift card. If it was a store gift card, then I can understand but I’m not sure what the issue would be with a Visa or MasterCard Gift Card. But, as I said before, this is only a suggestion. If you can not do it at your store, then simply do them in separate transactions.

      • I don’t understand what the issue is either, but apparently you can’t buy gift cards with other gift cards, even credit branded ones, in many places.

however, as another comment suggested, using the gift cards to pay for other things that you would have had to do anyway, such as a bill, is a great idea, still allowing all of the purchases, without having to worry about whether the store will impose it’s ‘discretion’ on you without warning.

  • I did the Stop & Shop deal the other day…. buy $100.00 Visa, and get $10.00. Did this 3 x’s, and on the 3rd time, the night “manager” came over and started yelling that you can’t do this… the 2 were already done, and I told her I didn’t have enough money with me, and got away with the 3rd one….
So, my question to you Cindy is : Where do you shop that allows this, because the rest of us seem to get in trouble trying to do what you list on your website. Personally, I don’t see the problem. I pointed out to that manager, it’s a VISA CARD, NOT a Stop-Shop card, and Visa/Master Card is accepted WORLDWIDE. And, if it’s accepted in MILLIONS of places, why not the little Stop-Shop in Union, NJ?

    • If you can not do it that way, then just simply buy them individually. The deal idea is just a suggestion.

      • Thank you for the suggestion. I did this deal but I then used the Visa cards to pay my Comcast bill. I would have paid the Comcast bill with my Discover card anyway so I made a little by buying the Visa cards with my Discover card at Stop and Shop and getting Catalinas. My Stop and Shop didn’t have any problem doing back to back orders buying the cards but I didn’t use the first Visa card to pay for the next one. I will get 1% cash back from Discover, too. When we did the gas cards my Discover card was giving 5% cash back for grocery store purchases so that was even a better money maker. Thanks as usual Cindy.

  • If I buy (4) $50 GCs in the same transaction will I get 4 cats? I’m going to a wedding next month and was going to give a check for $200, but thought I might do this instead…..

  • So if I’m understanding this correctly, it would be $70 OOP ($50 GC & $20 in fees) to walk away with $90 ($50 GC & 4 $10 cats). Seems like a lot of work to just gain $20. I think I’m going to hold off on this one too.

    • You must be new to ‘moneymaker’ scenarios then, especially in the coupon blogging world. This is just a bonus to top off your great week of shopping at ShopRite, deals galore.

You are making money for buying 1 item, presumably while shopping for other stuff…how is it a lot of work? These types of deals will NOT replace your day job.

I only comment on things like this because the bloggers/readers work really hard and carefully to come up with these scenarios. There is just no need to nay-say their efforts if you aren’t offering additional information.

Just sit back, imagine no input from the bloggers, and remember how shopping used to be…I remember it being expensive and a solo sport.

When did our thankless culture infect the couponing world? I never expected the 2 cents we saved to be offered back like this.

      • I did not look at the date on the stop and shop cat when I bout it…but in my 2nd transaction I purchased another $100 gift card and around $10-worth in produce…then paid with the gift card and about $6 cash…got another CAT so it seems to be “rolling” and isn’t all that much work.

      • Amen, Eric! Amen!!

      • Hey, Eric, felt I should chime in here. I only know Christine R. from posts/threads on this site, but, have to say, she should NOT be lumped into the ‘thankless culture’ category. Possibly, you may not have come across any of her other posts, before. She is fairly new, but, not brand new, and, despite that, has, for the last few months, been VERY helpful and willing to answer people’s questions, give her feedback from certain stores/offers, etc. She regularly gives back to this community, so, please don’t confuse this comment she made with her not being thankful for this site, or, for the offers posted here! I don’t think she was nay-saying the work put into coming up with the offer for us, at all – I think she was saying it wouldn’t work well for her.

I THINK (and, Christine, please feel free to jump in here if I am mistaken, cause this is only my opinion!) what she may have meant is exactly what I was thinking – that this would entail 4 trips/transactions to realize the $20 potential savings, and, for some of us, that is not always easy, or, do-able.

For example, I share a car, so, don’t always have the ability to pop into and out of stores at a moment’s notice like some readers can. And, while I, many times, go out to the car, unload my purchases, then, go back in, I can’t always do that more than once (equalling 2 transactions). Also, my SR specifically doesn’t allow back to back transactions, nor do we have any self check-out lanes! In addition, those Visa/MC ‘debit’ cards are not always easy to use, even at SR. So, there can be many reasons why something of this nature could be considered ‘too much work’, including something I don’t face, having young children in tow, etc. So, all I’m saying, is, don’t make rash judgements!

Christine, just a comment to your point, any time you can make $20 by ‘investing’ $70, at an approximate 30% ROI, that is a great financial return on your investment! But, even with that, like you, I will be passing this up, due to the…’work’ involved!

        • I’ll be honest, I didn’t read that beyond the first 2 sentences. You’d save more time for deal hunting and couponing by avoiding things like that.

I do apologize for twisting anyone’s knickers, I’m a coupon vigilante and always mean well ;)

          • Hahahah! Maybe this will be short enough for you: All your [many] other responses sounded just like your first one – quite pompous (vigilante, indeed!)! I think that’s what some of us felt compelled to reply to, but, yeah, ’nuff said, at this point!

      • Simmer down Eric. I’ve been doing this for over 2 years using Cindy’s website. My comment was nothing negative against her. I always appreciate the deal scenarios that she puts out there. I simply said that it didn’t seem worth it (to me, which is my opinion that I’m entitled to) and I’m going to hold off…..just like the first person who commented on this thread but didn’t get jumped on.

        • Hahahah, nicely said, Christine (and, much more succintly than in my response!). Just to correct one of my comments, sorry, thought you were newer to this site, but, now I know better!

          • Hey Rocky! I’ve been using the site for about 2 years now, but I didn’t start chiming in with all you guys until last summer when I became comfortable enough to share. And thanks for backing me by the way….I really didn’t mean any harm by my post! We all love Cindy and this website that’s for sure! :-)

            • Of course, we all know that ‘having backers’ means you are right. I hope we can invent a car that runs on absurdity. ;p

        • Eric in NJ,
I agree with Rocky. *I* personally was feeling the same way, and don’t think Christine meant to say anything negative. It seems like an easy way to make 20 bucks, depending on your store if they don’t give you a hard time using the Visa gift cards to buy the next set of Visa gift cards. Some Shoprites are not the easiest to shop at (at least in my area) so it might not be worth it for me to try. Plus I have two kids under 2 and it is a lot to take them in and out of the car. With that being said, there will probably be better deals coming up that I would most likely wait to do.

That being said, I really love the livingrichwithcoupons blog and it is one of my favorites, but please don’t jump to conclusions and start name calling/attacking other people, because you do not know their situation. It makes it a not nice place to read. Thanks!

          • It’s fine, apparently my benign posting didn’t relate to anyone’s life but my own; I get that. It’s because I am the one that wrote it, not anyone else.

I really think this a moot topic at this point, the horse is down.

        • I am not emotionally involved here enough to require simmering down ;)

I was just reading the post and it stuck out, so I responded. A back story, nor explanation, nor reference to your entire blog post catalogue aren’t needed.

I am not infringing upon your entitlement nor am I commenting on you as a person. The need to defend all of that makes me more suspect, if anything.

I’m just always curious of the motivations of anyone to post negative feedback just because they have it. If you can point out how that’s productive, in any way, and not just you exercising your freedom to opinion; you should. Not for me, for you.

Peace and love, peace and love.

    • That was my thought Too !!!

  • I’ll probably buy 1 or 2, for a $5-$10MM. I won’t go crazy like I did with the last GC promotion! LOL!!!! Thanks for the heads up on this one!!!

  • Question is kinda off topic, but aren’t Summer Dollar Days coming soon? Like, maybe the same week that these Cats are aloud to be used?

    • Oooo, nice. Hopefully, the SDD are better than the summer Can Can sale was/is. I am really not impressed w/can can….

    • That’s a great thought, I’ll be asking that question when I hit up ShopRite tomorrow.

    • Yeah!! Like, I was thinking, wouldn’t that be an awesome way to start your Dollar Days!!! Wasn’t there some Cat deal back in winter that we rolled into Winter Dollar Days?

  • Most places only accept cash or debit for gift card purchases. I’d totally do a recon before getting excited about this one.

  • Catalina . . . GREAT. BUT that deal doesnt work because it says on the catalina cannot be redeemed until 7/25. FYI

  • Stop and Shop did not give me a problem AT ALL and I did the deal three times, but Shop Rite might. I haven’t tried before, but they are very clear about the rule that gift cards (at Shop Rite) must be purchased with cash or debit. I might call ahead before going and getting annoyed if they do not allow it.

    • If I remember correctly, don’t those Visa type cards have a Debit logo on them? At worst, it may require you register the card via the website to use it as such, but I swear they work on the Debit platform.

  • To all the mutant repliers -
No one forced you to come on this site. Cindy is merely providing you with free advice. If you don’t want it, then don’t take it. Simple as that.

    • Kill ‘em with kindness and an explanation, seems to be the way elsewhere, should apply here as well. ;) I know we outnumber the negative-nancies and always will.

  • Does anyone else think its going to include other GC?

    • They were listed in the ShopRite circular on the website. I am not sure if it differs by region though, check their site using your zipcode to check your exact circular. Or be brave and try to get a Customer Service person to ramble them off to you ;p

  • I was thinking about checking out some of the Gift Card exchange sites where you exchange even value gift cards with other users.

It may be a good way to avoid eating a Visa activation fee, enjoy your $10 cat, and exchanging the card for an equal value card that ShopRite doesn’t stock.

With the amount of those exchange sites out there, it doesn’t seem like that much effort. Good way to cut back costs on easy Birthday/occasion gifts.

  • Hi! New poster here. For some reason I can’t find the GC offer in the upcoming circular…does anyone know what page it’s on? Many thanks!

    • This deal starts tomorrow, Sunday. The active flier online is for this current week, through today. The flier for tomorrow will be live on their site around midnight tonight :) .

Most of us get them in the mail before today, I guess that’s why there has been so much chatter on a deal that isn’t live yet. Hope that helps.

  • I’m pretty sure my Shop Rite doesn’t allow you to purchase gift cards with a credit/debit card. They were having some problems with people buying gift cards with stolen credit cards. In fact, one day when I was checking out, I witnessed this. So, I guess I can understand.

    • ShopRite allows you to use a Debit card for buying gift cards.

Credit and debit are entirely different. If your card has a PIN number, you can buy a gift card with it. The difference is how the funds are called/held. Debit will not work unless you have the money and Debit affords the merchant much better protection.

If you run into a situation where that is questioned, just ask for their policy in writing.

Or do what I did last time, and call their corporate office and ask them to remedy the situation for your local store. It seems extreme, but I get zero nonsense in that particular store anymore. (West Milford, NJ btw ;) Anyone who has shopped there will know what I mean.

      • The Shop-Rite in Clark, NJ does allow you to use credit OR debit to purchase gift cards… just did it a couple of wks. ago for gas cards, etc.

But, I go there all the time, and am very familiar with a lot of the personnel there, so maybe that’s why I don’t get a lot of hassles…

Also, have ALWAYS used a credit card to purchase gift cards for restaurants, stores, etc. at their actual locations (Applebee’s, TGIF’s, Best Buys, etc.), and have never had a problem.

      • I used a credit card to buy my gift card. Then used that card to buy another gift card. Done 3x to date, on the same price plus and have 3 cats. Woo-hoo!

  • Totally works!!! Went this morning!!!

  • Tried at shoprite in aberdeen, doesn’t work on visa $50

  • Just came back from SR EHT. Had a great cashier Jessica who called over a nasty customer service woman. I wanted to make sure I had the right card etc since I could not find any sign of the Catalina offer. Everything worked great. I bought 2 and received 2 $10 Catalinas. Thank you for the information!

  • Cindy,

    Is this a regional deal?

I went to 2 ShopRite stores which had nothing posted about this offer. I asked at customer service and they had no clue what I was talking about. I did not purchase the gift cards without being positive I was getting that 10 CAT.

    • I’ve noticed at a lot of stores/chains, most of the employees have no idea those little extra receipts have a name…let alone knowing Catalina and the deals. I try to put a smile on and educate them the best I can. The A&P employees seem to be the most oblivious of them all.

Always be wary of that, but I’ve had no problems returning items using the Catalina excuse; if they don’t print properly.

    • It shouldn’t be regional. I haven’t heard anyone say it’s not working yet so it seems to be for everyone.

      • Thanks for the responses. I received a printout which looks like the photo on your post Cindy from the CAT machine informing me of the gift card deal last week. Thankfully, I kept it so I will have to bring it with me when I go back to avoid any hassles.

ShopRite usually has a sign up regarding these type of deals but both my local stores did not which made me question the whole thing.

I’m glad it’s working for others so I’m sure it will work for me too :)

    • My store didn’t have a sign, but I bought the only $50 visa card that was there, and got my $10 Cat, no problem.

  • It totally worked! I bought a $50 Visa gift card (gc), then turned around and used it to buy another $50 Visa gc. Now I have two gcs to use to pay my cable and grocery bills, plus TWO CATs. YAY!!!!!!!!

  • Was wondering if someone could help me with this question. I saw somewhere else on the site that Itunes had a catalina deal going if you buy $40 or more in Itunes gift cards you will get a $10 catalina. Is this the same deal or are they two separate catalina deals?

  • Has anyone repeated the deal on the same price plus card?

  • Ok, I confirmed this today. 2 separate transactions, same price plus card. Planning to convert all of my gas money in my budget envelope to gift cards.

  • Where do you guys see this advertised? I can’t find it in the flyer :(

  • I dont know if its in the flyer. But it s on Shoprite website. Go to online service. then click the promotions. It on the bottom of the page. I says Gift card mall.

  • I bought a $50 mastercard yesterday and no $10 coupon printed so I went to the service desk. They couldn’t find the promo (or said it was only for last week) so they allowed me to return the gift card. They said it is only allowed if it is returned the same day you bought it.
