Jet.Com Launches – Offers Free Six-Month Membership

Jet.Com is open for business, offering online convenience with the savings of warehouse club shopping.  Six-month membership is free with coupon code: LESSMAYO. Merchandise ranges from food and pet supplies to tools and patio furniture. Many items ship in two days.

The online marketplace debuted in 2014, but opened to the public this week.  What’s unusual about Jet.Com is the range of merchandise combined with a pricing strategy that offers significant savings to consumers.  The company offers Youtube videos to explain both how the site works and how savings are generated.

Competitive Pricing

Specifically, Jet.Com offers warehouse pricing, with what is described as “human-size” quantities.  The pricing algorithm, which is explained in detail here, means that when customers choose a particular item, such as peanut butter, they will be offered additional savings on a related item, such as jelly.  These are called “Smart items,” and are designated with a green star.  When both items are placed in the online cart, customers may find additional money deducted from their total.

Shipping Costs & Returns

Shipping and returns are free with a purchase of $35 or more.  However, customers who waive the option to return their purchases receive another discount, approximately one percent off the item total.  Debit card user receive an additional discount.  The site does not accept coupons or discount codes besides its own.

Additional Discounts

Jet.Com also offers discounts at online retailers such as Crate & Barrel and Macy’s.com.  Shoppers click through from Jet.Com to one of the 600-plus partner stores.  After making a purchase, shoppers forward their order confirmation to [email protected] and receive credit in the form of “Jetcash.”  Jetcash can be used to purchase anything from the site.

Our Testing Results

Our Jet.Com tester bought pens, cake mix, and a hedge trimmer.  Savings were shown relative to prices at Amazon.com.  Buying pens led to a “Smart item” discount on highlighters.  Choosing an organic cake mix led to a suggestion for another brand of organic cake mix.  All items were available for shipping in two to five days.  When our tested clicked through to partner retailers, she was offered a discount of fifteen percent at J. Crew.com. She was not able to combine that with other offers.

After the introductory period, customers will pay $49.99 annually to belong to Jet.Com.  The site now offers 7.8 million items for sale.  Liza Landsman, Jet’s chief consumer officer, said the company is working to expand inventory, ease site navigation and streamline order tracking and customer service.
