McDonalds Debuts All-Day Breakfast

Good news for breakfast lovers: McDonalds will begin serving the breakfast menu all day long.  McDonalds is calling this “all-day breakfast,” and it takes effect on October 6.  McDonalds pioneered the fast-food breakfast in 1971 with the iconic Egg McMuffin.  New changes are due — at least in part — to the power of social media.

McDonalds began testing the all-day breakfast in March, in San Diego and the South, in response to consumer demand. In a statement, McDonald’s USA President Mike Andres said, “This is the consumers’ idea. This is what they want us to do.”

One way consumers reached out was via Twitter. More than 120,000 tweets directed to McDonalds asked for all-day breakfast.  McDonalds has, they say, replied to those tweets.  The first person who asked, in fact, was invited for breakfast.

Why didn’t this change happen sooner if consumers wanted the breakfast menu from dawn until dusk? Until now, explained Andres, the challenges of preparing a wide variety of foods seemed daunting. To streamline the process, McDonalds will begin by offering a limited number of items available all day.  Those include sausage burritos, hot cakes and Egg McMuffins or biscuit sandwiches.

Consumers are also likely to see only the top-sellers listed on the drive-through menu.  This change took effect in May of this year for many markets.

With the power of social media to make a big change in a hometown eatery, what has been the response.  News agencies galore have responded to the news, as have individuals.  “Well isn’t that not just the best news to wake up to?!” tweets Kait Sweeney.
