Weis Markets Announces Changes to Sales Cycle, Circulars

Weis Markets announced a change to its weekly sales flyers, but not everyone is celebrating.  The grocery store chain revealed that its weekly circular, which Weis calls “The Encyclopedia of Savings,” will no longer be distributed in weekend newspapers.  Instead, according to the Weis Markets announcement, the circular will be distributed in “ your Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday paper,” starting September 17.  There is no word yet on which regions will receive circulars on which day.

In addition, sale prices will no be in effect from Sunday through the following Saturday, so your local Weis may now have a different sales cycle than another store.  The changes were announced via Facebook and Twitter.

Confusing?  Weis representatives explain,

“We are changing the timing of our ad to give our customers a head start on the weekend since it allows them to plan their weekend shopping ahead of time. This move also allows us to offer more consistent pricing over the weekend rather than having differing specials on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, it helps our store associates better serve our customers during the busiest time of the week since they will no longer be focused on ad change over.”

Consumers quickly took to the Weis Facebook page to express their dismay.  One poster explained,

We only get the Sunday paper. As do a lot of your customers. It seems to make more sense keeping it in the Sunday paper due to the fact that those who get the weekly paper also get the Sunday paper. Those who only get the Sunday paper do NOT get a weekly paper….. Very bad decision.”

Numerous others echoed the same sentiments. “ I only get the Sunday. Guess I will shop elsewhere,” posted another.  Shoppers offered similar thoughts on the Weis twitter feed.
