Becks Beer Settlement

These days, choosing which beer to drink is more complicated than ever. We’ve undergone a virtual revolution of brewing that pairs fancy imports and American standards alongside small-batch micro brews and craft flavors on restaurant menus and supermarket shelves everywhere.

Trying to hitch in on the trend, many large brewers, such as Anheuser-Busch have expanded their marketing and product offerings beyond the basic American pilsner to appeal to a larger, savvier beer-drinking crowd. However, as a recent class action settlement proves, they may have stepped over the line of truth in the process.

The lawsuit Francisco Rene Marty et al vs. Anheuser-Busch Companies, LLC alleges that the brewing giant marketed its line of Beck’s beers, which includes Beck’s Pilsner, Beck’s Dark, Beck’s Light, and Beck’s Oktoberfest, as brewed in and imported from Germany when, in fact, it is a domestic product.

While Anheuser-Busch denies any wrongdoing, they have settled in the U.S. District Court in South Florida to avoid a court appearance.

The Settlement

There are two major terms of the settlement. First, for the next five years, the company will prominently display the terms “Brewed in the USA” or “Product of the USA” on all Beck’s marketing materials and packaging. This includes cans and bottles, cartons, and on the company’s website under the “About Beck’s” heading.

Second, monetary compensation in the form of a partial refund is available to anyone who has purchased Beck’s products. This is because the suit alleges that the misrepresentation of Beck’s as an imported German beer drove up its price.

Those eligible to file a claim may do so on the lawsuit’s official website or via traditional mail between now and November 20, 2015. Compensation is provided for those with and without proof of purchase, though the total refund available without proof is capped at $12 compared to $50 with proof.

Here is the breakdown of refund rates according to the size and type of Beck’s purchased:

  • Six pack of 12 oz. bottles or cans: $.50 each
  • Four pack of 16 oz. cans: $.50 each
  • Twelve pack of 12 oz. bottles or cans: $1.00 each
  • Fifteen pack of 12 oz. bottles or cans: $1.25 each
  • Twenty pack of 12 oz. bottles: $1.75
  • Individual bottle or cans: $0.10 each
