Skippy Peanut Butter Recall

Hormel Foods, the parent company of Skippy peanut butter, issued a very limited recall of its Skippy Reduced Fat Smooth Peanut Butter yesterday due to the possibility of metal shavings inside the jars. A routine cleaning and in-line magnet check alerted the company to the possibility of contamination, no injuries or illness has been reported from consumers at this time.

This recall is incredibly limited and only encompasses 153 cases or 1,871 pounds of the Skippy Reduced Fat Smooth Peanut Butter product, all of which share a single code date. Here are the details:

Product: Skippy Reduced Fat Creamy Peanut Butter

Size: 16.3 oz. jars only

“Best If Used By”: DEC1416LR1

UPC Code: 37600-10500

Stores with product distribution: Publix, Target, and Walmart

States with product distribution: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia

Although there are no reports of metal shavings from consumers, Hormel is issuing this recall as an alert because any foreign object longer than 7mm or 1/4 inch presents a risk of severe injury including airway obstruction and intestinal perforation.

Any consumers with the product are advised not to consume it. Rather, they can bring it to the store where it was originally purchased for a full refund. Alternately, they can call Hormel Foods Customer Relations at 1-866-475-4779, Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Central Time.
