Nature’s Promise Recall

Last week, Stop & Shop Supermarkets LLC, which includes Stop & Shop stores along with Giant Food, and Martin’s Food Markets, issued a voluntary Class I recall of all its Nature’s Promise packaged edamame products, including both shelled edamame and edamame in pod, found in the frozen or natural frozen foods section of its stores. The reason for this recall is that edamame, which are young, green soy beans, contain a known allergen, soy, yet the product’s label does not state this outright.

To date, Stop & Shop has no reports of injury or illness from these products and, indeed, they are safe to consume if you do not have an allergy or sensitivity to soy. However, for those who are allergic, consumption may lead to a severe reaction. They should discard the product and/or return it to the store for a full refund.

Here are the detailed listings of the affected products:

Nature’s Promise Organic Shelled Edamame, 16 oz., UPC 68826712764

Nature’s Promise Organic Edamame in Pod, 16 oz., UPC 68826702124

While edamame are, in fact, soy beans, the lack of the explicit term “soy” on the product’s label is in violation of the FDA’s Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (Public Law 108-282, Title II). Learn more about that act, here. Thus, Stop & Shop Supermarkets LLC issued this Class I recall, the highest of all recall levels since the items contained in the product have the potential to cause serious injury or death.

Stop & Shop Supermarkets operate in five states: Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island

Giant Foods are found in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia

Finally, Giant/Martin operate in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.
