Massive Recall for Undeclared Allergens

Conagra Brands, Inc. which manufactures products for a number of well-known brands, issued a massive recall last Friday for its precooked spaghetti and meatball products. According to a press release from the USDA’s Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) this recall affects some 717,338 pounds of food. The issue, according to this brief, is an undeclared allergen – milk.

FSIS states that Conagra discovered the issue through one of their ingredient suppliers. The supplier relayed that the bread crumbs used to make the meatballs in product contained milk. None of the labels declared this allergen. Conagra has not been notified of any adverse reactions to their food. Still, they issued the recall out of an abundance of caution.

Products Affected

Conagra distributes foods under a variety of brand names, including well-known national labels Chef Boyardee and Libby’s. All the products are 14.75-oz cans of precooked spaghetti and meatballs made with pork, chicken, and beef in tomato sauce. What to Do with Recalled Cans

This recall is quite large, affecting well over 700,000 pounds of products. Among those, Chef Boyardee brand cans are by far the most prevalent. According to FSIS, some 414,424 pounds of Chef Boyardee are impacted. As a result, customers across the country purchased these cans from a variety of retailers.

Because of this widespread distribution, FSIS encourages consumers to check their cupboards. They state that individuals should not consume the product, but rather dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase.
