DIY Christmas Centerpieces

by Cindy on December 21, 2011

Christmas Centerpeices

I love making the holiday table beautiful.  It just makes the meal seem so much more special.  But, I don’t like paying for those expensive centerpieces. I often find myself searching around my house trying to find some items to make something pretty and creative. Check out some of these Christmas Centerpieces that you can do yourself on the cheap.  Shh, no one will know you didn’t spend a dime on them. ;)

Ornament Centerpiece

No one will notice a few ornaments missing from the tree.  Grab some fresh or artificial berry sprigs and Viola! (for those that don’t appreciate my slang)…a beautiful centerpiece.  And you can splash on a little glitter to add some sparkle if you like.  Put it on a tray or long plate or place it right on the table.  This is a great idea for a longer table.  You can even do 2 smaller ones to leave room for your food.  Check out the details of this Ornament Centerpiece.

Cranberry Centerpiece
These Cranberry Centerpieces are as simple as they look! All you need is some kind of glass or see through container, cranberries and a candle! You can make them all different sizes or the same! Again, it is all up to you and your creativity!

Candy Cane Vase Centerpiece

How adorable is this.  And, this Candy Cane vase is very super easy! You’ll need a hot glue gun, any vase or container, candy canes, some ribbon.  Clue the candy canes to the container, wrap a ribbon and bam, a cute Christmas Vase.  You can get a pot of poinsettia or carnations or any flower will  look beautiful!  I love tulips any time of year.  Make a couple for your table!

Christmas Branch Centerpiece

If you like simple and clean lines well then, this one is for you. This Christmas Tree Branch Centerpiece is simple and elegant. You can use any type of glassware that you have in your home, snip a few pieces of your Christmas tree and drop it in a glass.  That’s it!  I’m thinking designers get paid big bucks to but this together ;)

Pinecone and Candle Centerpiece

Here is a classic pinecone and candle inspired centerpiece.  All you need is some pine cones from your yard, a candle, a jar (mason jars give a rustic feel) and some pieces of your christmas tree and you can make a small display in the middle of your table! This centerpiece will smell smell so pretty and look beautiful too!

Do you have any DIY Christmas Centerpiece ideas?

Frugal Tip: Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipe

by Cindy on October 12, 2011

Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipes

Reader Heather shared her great frugal idea…how to make Homemade Laundry Detergent

I try to be super frugal while remaining as earth conscience as possible. Coming from a public health background, I try to avoid phosphate-based laundry detergent due to the detrimental effects on ground water. Buying earth friendly cleaning products (with the exception of white vinegar) is all but out of the question on my budget.

So, in an effort to save money and feel good about the impact on the environment and my family’s health I decided to make my own laundry detergent. Here’s the recipe I use:

Here is Heather’s Recipe (check the box to be able to print the recipe):

With a cloth diapered baby & half a dozen pets I have high standards but I am very happy with this detergent. In the future I will cut this recipe in half – 10 gallons is A LOT of detergent! Also, I might add a couple drops of essential oil.

Be sure to check out the other great frugal recipes for Homemade Handsoap and Homemade Baby Wipes

My Front Garden Walkway

Frugal Gardening Tips

I posted this last year but thought it would be great to repost it since we are just starting to prepare our gardens.

Planting a flower garden does not have to cost you an arm and a leg.  Nor does it have to take up your entire weekend.  There are some simple things you can do that are quick, easy and free.  And as I always say, if it’s for free, it’s for me!

1. Clean out the gardens

Get your hands dirty.  Clean out those garden beds.  Remove all the dead plants and leaves.  All that should be in the garden are your beautiful plants.  And you don’t have to replace your mulch every year.  Turn it, fluff it and make it look fresh.

2. Separate existing plants

Go through your garden and look for plants that can be separated.  Separating them and using them in different locations in the garden has a double benefit.  The first is that it keeps your existing plants from getting too big and second, it enables you to expand your garden for free.  And we like free!

3. Don’t plant too close

Sometimes when the plants are small, we tend to plant too close together especially in the spring when everything has yet to get to full size.  I am known for doing this way too often.  Resist the temptation.  Keep your plants far apart other wise you will have a crowded mess when they get bigger and wind up moving them all around.  Hmm, that sounds familiar.  Honey, can you move this plant over here and this plant over there. :)

4. Keep deer out naturally and inexpensively

A great way to keep deer out of your garden is to use hair.  Yes hair.  Deer do not like the smell of humans so unless you want to lay across your garden bed 24/7 you can use the next best thing.  Human hair.  So, the next time you get your hair cut, bring a bag along and ask for the hair clippings.  Spread them along the edge of your garden bed.

5. Get rid of weeds naturally and inexpensively

Use undiluted vinegar to spray on weeds and even grass in sidewalk cracks or bricks.  Keep the vinegar in a  sprayer and shoot those weeds when you see them.

6. Make your own fertilizer

Epsom salt is a great alternative to fertilizer.  It’s made up of magnesium and sulfate which plants love, especially houseplants, roses, tomatoes & peppers.  And, not only is it frugal, but it’s also better for the environment.  Combine 1 tablespoon Epsom Salt with 1 gallon of water in a watering can.  Water your plants with this solution once a month.

7. And the last and to me the most important.  Edge your garden beds!

I’m actually amazed at how many people don’t do this simple task.  Which, in my opinion, finishes off the whole garden.  At the beginning of the spring, when you have cleared out all the dead plants and leaves and turned your soil and/or mulch, edge the garden beds.  Simply take a lawn edger and go along the entire length of the garden where it meets the grass.  It makes for such a beautiful defined garden.  I do it about 3 more times during the summer and fall.  Plus you can edge it with the garden trimmer as well each time you mow & trim your lawn.  Turn the garden trimmer on it’s side and move it along the edge of the garden bed.  You can also do the same thing where the grass meets up with sidewalks or driveways for a professional look.

What do you do to make your garden beautiful?  Share your frugal gardening tips!

As some of you may remember from my mini house tour, I so love decorating.  The only problem…my budget does not love it.  So, I try really hard to make my house look nice without having to spend a lot of money.

Right now, we have to do some work in our bathroom because one of our faucets was falling apart.  We lost part of the top of it, it shoots water out like a water gun spraying water everywhere and the drain plug is broken causing more and more items to fall into the drain.  Who knows how many Q-tips are in there?!?   Also, our shower head was pretty yucked up even after many many attempts to soak it in CLR and the likes.

Here is what I am starting with.  Sorry, the shower head picture is pretty blurry but you probably didn’t want to see the yucky stuff anyway.

Photobucket

Lucky for me, Home Depot is having a Redo & Renew Bathroom sale.  My husband and I headed there today to check out the prices.  They really had a lot of reduced prices on bathroom fixtures and to my surprise, their customer service was amazing. If you have been shopping at Home Depot as long as I have, you may remember, way back, when there was always someone available to happily help you. And, that is just how it was again today.

Jay, was great in helping my husband and I get exactly what we needed. Even making sure that we got all the hookups and putty and whatever else was needed so we didn’t have to make another trip. In less then 1 hour, we had picked out a bathroom faucet, shower head, light fixture and all the accessories we needed to install everything for just around $250. Which was my budget. I shopped and staying within my budget…woohoo! Something that does not happen too often when I’m doing a fix up in the house.

They also had a great Redo & Renew Your Bath For Less book which you can see above on the table.  Be sure to pick one of those up as it’s filled with great tips on how to install bathroom fixtures yourself.  You can also check out the Bathroom How-to Center. Or, how to create a Half Bath of Your Dreams on a budget. Plus they have great workshops which you can sign up for as well.  So be sure to inquire about that when you are there.

Honestly there was so much to choose from.  And the prices during this Redo & Renew Bathroom sale are awesome.  There was a super nice Vanity with marble top & mirror for only $99 (org $250).  Plus the light fixture I picked up was only $59 (org $79).  Faucets were as low as $30.  And nice ones too.  And we are saving money by doing to installation ourselves.  I’ll let you know how that turns out.  Should be fun :)

But, I was really impressed at how you really can spruce up your bathroom for a great price.  And, wait, it gets even better, because….

Home Depot is giving away a $100 Home Depot gift card to one lucky Living Rich With Coupons reader to help give you a head start on your bathroom spruce up.
