Trader Joe’s Cashews Recall

In conjunction with its supplier, Heritage International (USA) Inc. of Compton, CA , Trader Joe’s has recalled a single lot of its Raw Cashew Pieces over fears of potential Salmonella contamination. The product in question bears the bar code number 00505154.

The lot in question is labelled “BEST BEFORE 07.17.2016TF4.”

Trader Joe’s issued this recall on January 15, 2016 following news from its supplier Heritage International (USA) Inc. that one bag of the product had tested positive for Salmonella in a routine FDA test. In addition, out of extreme caution, Trader Joe’s is pulling all lots of its Raw Cashew Pieces from its store shelves until the matter can be investigated further.

The affected lot of cashews was sold in Trader Joe’s stores in over 30 states, including: Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin.

The company is urging any consumers who have a bag from the affected lot of cashews to dispose of them immediately or return it to any Trader Joe’s store.

At this time, no illness has been reported from the contaminated lot.

About Salmonella

Salmonella is a potentially-fatal organism which has the potential to cause serious health complications in young children, the elderly, and the immune-compromised. Otherwise healthy adults who consume a product tainted with Salmonella are at less a risk for fatal outcomes, but will nevertheless experience gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, potentially accompanied by a fever. Anyone who has consumed Trader Joe’s Raw Cashew Pieces and is experiencing these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.

Consumers with questions can contact Trader Joe’s Customer Relations team at 626-599-3817 between the hours of 6am and 6pm PST, Monday-Friday. They can also email the company using their website contact page, here.
