My Shopping Trip: ShopRite

My Shopping Trip: ShopRite

Did you think I wasn’t shopping?  You were right, I actually wasn’t.  Some of you may already know that we sold our house and are looking for a new house in central Jersey.  We have finally taken the plunge and are moving closer to my parents and closer to Pat’s work.  But, I have to be honest and tell you that this is just SOOOO stressful.  So much of my time has been looking for houses and with that comes less time to do anything else, especially couponing.

Thankfully we have a great stockpile and I only needed to run in for a few items here and there.  But, truth be told, we have been eating out more the last couple of weeks as we are house hunting.  I can tell you, that because my grocery envelope was overflowing, we have not even had one bit of guilt doing it.  It’s times like these that couponing really pays off and in ways you can not even measure.  If I did not have a stockpile to live off of or extra money in my grocery budget to grab take out, who knows how much I really would have spent.  Honestly, it’s a great feeling!

Today, I was having my husband run to ShopRite for me.  I was a bit nervous because there were a lot of coupons.  But he eagerly left to go to ShopRite only to return minutes later to inform me that it was too crowded.  Well, after I nicely asked (okay, begged, pleaded, whined), he headed back to work through the crowd.  And, he had success.

    Way to go hubby!

  • kara

Just wondering where in central Jersey you are looking. We are in Monmouth County. Love it here!

    • Cindy

Yep, Monmouth County is exactly where we are looking. We actually had an offer on a house in Middletown and we were outbid 🙁 Broke my heart.

      • kara

LOL, come to Howell… My husband is from your neck of the woods (Maplewood), and he loves it here too 🙂

Good luck with the house hunt!

      • Heather

I’m in Somerset County and we’re looking out in Hunterdon County. I need me some country air!

      • anita m

we live in middletown and our house is for sale…LOL….very stressful as we had a buyer then they backed out last minute..ugh….middletown is very nice, but we really need to downsize; however one stipulation with the new house- must have room for my stockpile shelves!

        • megan

wow! i live in middletown too! what part do you live in? river plaza? lincroft? i guess you go to the shoprite in middletonw. ha maybe i will see you there!

      • megan

i live in middletown! love it here! houses are so nice and there are a lot of stores to shop at. (no close by walmart though) 🙁
what part of middletown? river plaza? licnroft?

        • claire

atlantic highlands is nice! right next to middletown and right on the water…really a true “small town” feel

  • chris

Great that your husband actually shops using the coupons. My husband is all for using coupons and loves the deals but, leaves it to me. Wish you luck with your house hunt. Right now we are car shopping. All I can picture is the price going down as soon as we drive it off the lot.

  • chris

Forgot to ask where you got your free Fresh Takes coupon? Makes a great fast meal with chicken.

    • Kim

Try it with Talapia! I liked it better on fish … had to use egg though to get the bread crumbs/cheese to stick!

      • chris

Great idea. With Good Friday coming up we’ll try it. We also used egg because it didn’t stick very well to the chicken.

  • deniel

I live right in keyport, and employed as a visiting nurse in the area, if your looking for a particular area, or local stores just let me know. Would love to help with anything you need. Love your website, been a loyal member for the past 2 years, when i moved out on my own and need to pay bills, couponing has made me love shopping again!!, good luck with the.move and you have to check out best market in holmdel when you get down here. Great produce and meat prices!!!

    • anita m

Deniel, is best market good??? i havent checked it out since it opened.

      • deniel

Its great!!, 1.99 ground beef all the time, fresh and cheap seafood and great produce, got strawberries 0.79 a container, plus they take coupons!!!!!

  • Mary

So..does he get the rush like we do when he saves that much?

    • Michele

Can’t speak for Cindy, but my husband definitely does NOT get the rush. LOL He has no problem with substituting a full-priced item when the “deal” isn’t available, for instance. I myself have to try not to get too wrapped up in deals, especially when you weigh time spent, gas, etc. I’m convinced there are times I do it for the rush, and not for the savings, so sometimes I ask myself, if someone called me on the telephone on a Saturday at 4:30 p.m., for example, and said “Go to Shoprite right now and you can get 4 lbs of butter for .47 each,” would I actually get in my car, drive 20 minutes each way in Saturday traffic to do it? Usually the answer is NO, so if I can’t combine it with another trip, I try to avoid weekend shopping jaunts. I pass Shoprite, Stop and Shop and Pathmark on my way home from work every weeknight, and I try to confine my trips to after work.

The house in middletown just wasn’t meant to be! It took me three YEARS to find my house. First I was told it was sold so I kept on looking. Then, out of no where it “wasn’t sold” and I knew the moment I stepped inside that I lost every other house because this one was waiting for me 🙂 Since I purchased it 2.5 years ago I felt the budget tightening as a new homeowner (rising taxes, home improvements, lawn care, not going to my mom’s to do laundry anymore 🙂 So I found your website. Since then I am more then comfortable again, with a basement full of anything I could ever need. I continue to overpay my mortgage every month with the money I save.
When the right house comes along, you will just know it!

  • Shanta

Wow an entirely free trip after Catalinas & Savingstar. I just started my envelope budgets on The 1st of this month & I hope one day my grocery budget envelope will overflow….thanx for all you do Cindy!!!!!

  • jonni

my husband would have paid full price for everything…..and that is why he is not allowed to go shopping.

    • anita m

hahaha, true in my household as well!!

Just got home from the Shoprite in Woodbridge, NJ and the cashier told me there were no longer allowed to accept internet coupons 🙁 He said that they were just told today not to accept them. I was wondering if you heard anything about it? I see that you were able to use some of them today, so I am wondering if this is specific to my store.

    • Michele

Wow, I sure hope that isn’t permanent! I’m in Staten Island, and for a while they weren’t accepting Smart Source, only, something about there wasn’t a URL on them. But now they accept all of them.

  • Sue

Hey Cindy, I am in Central Jersey. If you need a coupon friend, let me know 🙂 I live 5 minutes from the Jackson Outlets and Great Adventure.

    • Cheryl

Me too! I live on the same road as the outlets and great adventure. We love it here!

  • Susan

I went today and spent $153.55 and saved $176.75. Some highlights bought 2 I Can’t Believe It’s not butter and got free eggs. Used 2 $1.25/1 coupons on them.Got the Land O Lakes butter, bought 4 used 4 $.75/1 coupons. Bought 8 boxes of Kellogg’s cereal and used 2 $4.00/4 coupons. About the internet coupons I had a problem today too. The young man who checked me out today said that he had to get permission. When I asked why he said because they are photocopied. Both my husband and I told him that they were not. But he still questioned every coupon(and I had 40 coupons).

  • I too went to SR last night. Paid $56 & change for about $109 in groceries. About 53% savings. SR isn’t my #1 store, as my SR (Hatfield, PA) does not double past $.99, but they did have a few good specials going on this week. So for the LOL Butter, I used two of the $.50 off that was on, instead of the three $.75 off one that I have (which I will save for my #1 store, Giant, where I do much better percentage because they fully double past $.99, up to $1.98 max). I also got the free eggs with two ICBINB (2/$6, using two $1.25 off one coupons) and the four Kellogs cereals at $1.98 each, with the free cereal storage container (worth $2.98) using a $2.00 off any 2 and a $1.10 off of one brand (cinnabon flavor). I had a matching coupon for everything in my cart except some fresh vegetables, a bakery item from their bakery department, and a dog bone for Sir Westley 🙂 I did a separate transaction for my monthly CFAC bag, and scored one of the PA dutch noodles for free (after using the $1.00 of two coupon and a $.98 super SR coupon), as well as 2 Free boxes of SR Mac and Cheese with 1 can of SPAM. I had no trouble with internet coupons, of which I had many. The only problem I had was getting credit for the eggs – clerk had to call manager as I pointed out that the cost of the eggs did not come off at the end. Best of luck in your search for your new home!

  • Lady J

Cindy, it could be worse. You could be selling and buying a house and closing on the same date. I will never do that again. It worked, but it wasn’t without incident. Selling first, and buying second is better. If it takes a while and you don’t have someone to stay with, there are fully furnished apartments you can rent. You can probably get more info from your real estate agent, or the storage facility.

    Good luck.

  • Susan

The best of luck with your move Cindy! Can be very stressful indeed. Take some pics of your packed up stockpile!

  • Barbara A.

Nice shopping trip but maybe it shouldn’t be called “my” shopping trip? He He That is impressive that you got your husband to go back to a crowded store. You will find a great house soon and it will be in time to plant your summer garden…. Yes, we really do follow your site. I really wanted to ask what is up with the coupons not coming off? One of my Birds Eye coupons didn’t come off on both shopping trips as well as a couple of other coupons. I will go back tomorrow. The worst offender today was Target. Two coupons one for $5 and the other for $3 didn’t come off and that was after I argued with the cashier over what 50% of $19.99 is. She kept insisting that it is$9.50 and then called over another cashier who agreed with her. I politely told them they were wrong and went to customer service for my 50 cents. GEEEZ it was really just the principle. Is this the new math? I then returned a couple of minutes later after I realized that she hadn’t taken off all my coupons and the customer service person went over to her drawer and sure enough they were in there. I mean they scan them and you think that you are getting the money off but you really have to check your receipt. It seems to happen almost every time I go to Target. I was thinking that maybe you could remind your readers to check their receipts? (Especially at Target)
Thanks for helping me save so much money. Good luck with your house hunting…

    • toby

you have to watch @ target when they scan bec the machine is constantly asking the cashier to verify that you have X item in your cart of purchases. If they don’t press yes then the coupon does not go thru.

  • Karen

Cindy- Buy a foreclosure. True there is a lot to do in the beginning but the overall cost is worth it! We just bought one on auction 2 weeks ago and got a steal!

  • Nicole

Welcome to the neighborhood. Central nj has great shopping, restaurants, parks, beaches and more. I feel so privileged to have my couponing guru closer to my home!
I wish you and your family the best and many happy years in central nj,

  • Missy

Cindy! Moving to Monmouth County!!! Yeah.. maybe I can attend one of your classes!!! I live in Neptune, loads of houses here for sale. You’ve helped me save so much money and create a stockpile to survive off of for two winters now (my husband is a self employed landscaper and we have no income in the winter). Already working on the upcoming winter! Thanks again for all your help!

  • Marjie

Good luck on your move! If you don’t already know about them – the Jersey Shore Outlets (I think Exit 100) are awesome!
