Macy’s is opening six New York and New Jersey discount stores.  The new stores, some of which will replace existing Macy’s, are called Macy’s Backstage.  The stores will sell Macy’s clearance items, as well as special buys, at 20 percent to 80 percent off regular prices.

Employees at the Macy’s in West Orange, NJ, told Living Rich with Coupons that Macy’s Backstage stores will open in September.  Macy’s Backstage stores will be smaller than their department stores at some 30,000 square feet.  (That is roughly the same size as a T.J. Maxx.)

Stores Will Offer Wi-Fi, Cafe, Discounts

The six locations are considered “pilot” stores, where Macy’s will test out off-price sales.  The stores will not accept Macy’s coupons.  Nor, say the corporate release, will Macy’s Backstage have the same seasonal sales as the regular stores. The stores will accept the Macy’s credit card.

In addition, each store also will offer amenities, such as free WiFi and deluxe fitting rooms. One location will have a café within the store.

Stores Are Pilot Sites for Additional Discount Sites

Peter Sachse, Macy’s chief innovation and business development officer, said in a news release that the stores will be viewed as “test and learn” locations, so that the retailer can tweak its strategy before opening additional Backstage stores.

“We believe we can deliver a whole new level of value to customers who appreciate fashion and love to hunt for a bargain,” said Sachse.
