Gerber Recall for Potentially Spoiled Baby Food

Anyone who pays attention to recalls (like me!) may not find this surprising, but yet another company has recalled a batch of “pouch-style” food this week due to the potential for product spoilage. Gerber Foods announced this morning that four batches of its Organic 2nd Foods baby food pouches were produced with a defect that may cause the food to spoil long before its “best by” date.

Here’s a detailed listing of the products affected by the Gerber recall, as reported by the FDA:

GERBER Organic 2ND FOODS®Pouches –Pears, Carrots & Peas, 3.5 ounce pouch UPC 15000074319

Best By dates/batch codes

  • 12JUL2016 51945335XX
  • 13JUL 2016 51955335XX

GERBER Organic 2ND FOODS Pouches- Carrots, Apples and Mangoes, 3.5 ounce pouch UPC 15000074395

Best By dates/batch codes

  • 13JUL2016 51955335X
  • 14JUL2016 51965335XX

The Best By dates and batch codes are found on the back of each pouch, along the bottom banner. Gerber also advises that the affected pouches may appear bloated and that the food inside them may have an off color, taste, or odor.  According to additional news sources, at least three consumers have reported gastrointestinal upset following consumption of one of these baby food pouches, but there is no evidence that those cases are related to the food alone.

In its statement, Gerber warns parents not to consume the product or feed it to their babies. They also express that they issued this voluntary recall because, “we place the health and well-being of babies above all else, and we hold our foods to high standards of quality” and these pouches do not meet those quality standards.

Sold nationwide at a variety of retailers as well as online, Gerber has offered coupons to replace the affected pouches. Customers who would like a coupon should call the Gerber Parents Resource Center at 1-800-706-0556 any time.
