Quaker Oats Quinoa Bars the Latest Affected by Listeria Contamination

Yesterday, Quaker Oats Company, a subsidy of Pepsi Co. joined a growing number of producers recalling products due to a potential Listeria monocytogenes (L.mono) outbreak linked back to sunflower seeds. Though no illnesses have been reported that are directly linked to Quaker products, the company is recalling a limited number of their Quinoa Granola Bars out of an abundance of caution.

Most of the affected product batches were pulled off store shelves before reaching consumers, however, there are some that were sold nationwide. Here are the details:

Consumers who have these products should not eat them. Instead, dispose of them or return them to the original place of purchase for a full refund. Information about Listeria monocytogenes

Listeria  monocytogenes or L.mono is an organism that has the potential to cause serious, and sometimes fatal side effects among particular sects of the population. This includes the very young, the very old, and anyone with a compromised immune system. Furthermore, L.mono has been linked to miscarriage and stillbirth in pregnant women.

In otherwise healthy individuals, L.mono may cause temporary illness which includes severe headaches, high fever, stiffness, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea. These effects will be short-term.
