Kellogg’s Recalls 10,000 Cases of Eggo Waffles Amid Concerns of Listeria Contamination

The Kellogg Co. announced yesterday that it was “voluntarily” recalling some 10,000 cases of its Whole Wheat Nutri-Grain waffles. The announcement came after routine laboratory tests revealed a potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination among a single lot of waffles. According to the company, this is an isolated incident, affecting only one type of Eggo and Kellogg’s product.

Kellogg’s and their distributors delivered the products in question to various retailers in 25 states, including New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Maryland. To find out if your waffles are part of the recall, check the following information against what is printed on the box:

Furthermore, Kellogg’s describes this recall as entirely voluntary, and a part of their “commitment to the health and safety of the people who eat its foods.”

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that causes serious and sometimes fatal infections in vulnerable populations. Those at the highest risk include the very old, very young, and immune-compromised. Furthermore, Listeria contamination is especially dangerous to pregnant women as it can cause miscarriage or stillbirth.

Signs and symptoms of Listeria exposure vary in their intensity and may be mild for healthy people. They include high fever, headache, nausea, stiffness, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
