Italian Knot Cookies

They are more like little cakes that are iced with a anise flavored icing. So yummy!

Cookies:

  1. Melt butter and let cool
  2. Beat melted butter, eggs, sugar and vanilla until well blended
  3. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl
  4. Add flour mixture to butter/egg mixture. Mix until almost combined
  5. Add warm water and continue mixing until smooth
  6. Place on a floured board
  7. Make a ball slightly smaller then the size of a golf ball
  8. Roll balls into "snake" approx 4" long
  9. Cross the snake ends one over the other and tie a knot with them
  10. Place on ungreased cookie sheet
  11. Back at 350 for 15-17 minutes (bottoms should be just slightly brown)
  12. Let cool completely

Icing:

  1. Mix all ingredients adding water until the right consistency. Should be thicker but slightly drippy.
  2. Dip top of cookies into icing and set on waxpaper
  3. While the icing is still wet, sprinkle with nonpareils
  4. Let icing dry until hardened before storing or serving
