Official Dollar Tree Coupon Policy

Dollar Tree Coupon PolicyDollar Tree Coupon Policy

Yesterday I announced that Dollar Tree Stores will be accepting coupons starting on 8/26.  Here is the official Dollar Tree Coupon Policy.  Be sure to print the policy to include it in your coupon binder or folder.

It’s a fairly basic policy.  The only draw back I see is that they are limiting the internet printed coupons to only two per transactions.  Other then that, it’s pretty straight forward and should make for some great deals.

Here are the details of the policy:

  • Only original and intact manufacturers’ coupons will be accepted. Retailer-specific coupons will not be accepted.
  • Coupons are void if copied, scanned, or if they have been altered in any way.
  • We are unable to accept coupons for “Free” items with no purchase requirements or where the amount for the product is blank.
  • Coupons can only be used in stores and must be presented at time of purchase. Coupons cannot be redeemed for cash at a later time.
  • Coupons will not be accepted without the purchase of the item specified and are subject to the terms listed (e.g. expiration date, size, limitations, quantity, etc.).
  • Coupons cannot be redeemed for more than the purchase price of the item.
  • Only one (1) manufacturer’s coupon will be accepted per item.
  • Management has the right to refuse any coupon or otherwise limit quantities.

Added 12/10/12:

  • We accept coupons for over a dollar on a single item. The coupon value will be reduced to the purchase price of the item.
  • We cannot give cash back if the face value of a coupon is greater than the purchase price of the item.
  • Coupons for free items are only accepted if a purchase is required to get one free (for example, Buy One Get One Free offers).
  • We accept up to two (2) Internet Coupons per household per day.
  • Internet Coupons must be a “Manufacturer Coupon”, have a valid expiration date and a valid remit address for the manufacturer.
  • We do not accept Internet Coupons for “Free” items with no purchase requirements.
  • Duplicated (photocopies) Internet Coupons will not be accepted. Each Internet Coupon must have a different serial number.

Added 3/6/13:

  • We accept coupons for over a dollar on multiple items if the coupon amount does not exceed the combined retail price of the items indicated.
  • We accept up to four (4) like coupons per household per day.

I now need to schedule a trip to see what deals I can find…

  • Julissa

This is great! Now which stores will be accepting mfr coupons? I know that in your original post about this yesterday you said only a select number of store will be accepting mfr coupons. How can I find out if the one closest to me is accepting?

    • Chris

All stores will be accepting coupons.

    • QponingDiva

I don’t have NO problem asking a store if they accept coupons. No shame in my game

    • christy

I went to Dollar Tree this evening and they would not accept any one my coupons….This is a dollar store that has a catch 22…You go to purchase an item which is a dollar however they claim to accept coupons but not if the coupon is a dollar…so really they don’t accept coupons…

      • jessa

I had same issue on my trial run other night. I had with me their policy . Wwhich cleary states other wise. I pointed out I was paying for 6 of my items I had no coupons for. There for money was being used and I was not in breach of their ppolicy. I also pointed out I had no problem waiting in line until they resolved the proper reading of the policy . But Im mean when it comes to saving a penny. The manager came out and told me seriously mam your going to be upset over a dollar. HECK yes. A dollar saved is a dollar I can use to pay my house payment. Then he treated as if because I clip coupons I’m some sort of reject. That’s when I blew my top. Yelled do you realize last year I clipped over 8,000 coupons and fed 3 family who had lost jobs. My stock pile just like other families stock piles are our safety net in a time of hardship. Then I asked hI’m if he’s ever gone into a store with 20 bucks and came out with 15 left and 500 in times? sorry bit off track but ignorance and rude people. Yucky. Anyways you go back girl take policy snow see a manager. You will get your way.

        • Cheri H

The Dollar Trees near me post signs that state that their items are “already heavily discounted” so they will not accept coupons. I understand they have a national policy, and have brought it in to the store, and the manager told me that each store has the option to accept coupons or not, and they chose not to take them.
I swear most of CA is like this. Many stores don’t take internet coupons AT ALL.
It makes me a bit concerned as I know the store is reimbursed. I wonder if stores have tried to defraud the manufacturers?

      • Lisa

This is so funny. My Dollar Tree finally agreed to give me credit for a $1.00 coupon I had for a $1.00 product, HOWEVER, they refused to give me credit for a $1.00 coupon ($1.00/2) for $2.00 worth of merchandise. I’d still be paying $1.00!!! She had it confused with a $2.00/1 coupon, where the coupon is worth more than the product to be purchased. When I pointed out her mistake, she REALLY raised hell because it (obviously) embarrassed her. I left there with my coupons in hand and no merchandise…

I had the same problem last night. I tried to use a $1/2 coupon, and the cashier told me they wouldn’t accept it. I had used a couple of the same coupons the week before, but he said it shouldn’t have worked. What is the problem?! I am getting so frustrated with stores doing this to me. I am getting $2 of product. The store is receiving $2 plus a fee- $1 from me and $1 + a fee from the manufacturer. They act like I am trying to cheat them all the time. I am extremely cautious to make sure the coupon is correct before I get to the register….I’ve been hours in stores before. Wal-Mart gave me a problem with a deal I had seen on-line. The coupon didn’t work, even though the item was correct. I went to a different Wal-Mart, and they over-rode the register to take the coupon. It shouldn’t have to be this difficult…..

At my local Dollar Tree (store #2009) in Anniston, AL I have had horrible experiences! Im a mother of 2 toddlers, and I need to save money on my grocery/household items, in order to get by with the rest of my bills. I always follow coupon policy, and never try to cause any issues, but the last 2 trips to my store were horrible!!! I was planning to use 2 manufacturer coupons from the newspaper, and 2 print at homes ones. They were all $1/1 coupons, which is accepted, and I would only have to pay the 10 percent tax on the items. The cashier was very kind, but the nasty Assistant manager “Carrie” was less than plesant. She began by telling me that I could only use 2 coupons per household per day. I explained that their coupon policy stated otherwise, and showed it to her. She said that she has the right to refuse any coupon for any reason (which she does), and I asked her for a reason why she would refuse them. She raised her voice to me, and said that she didnt have to give me any reason! At this point my son (3 year old) began to cry, because he was afraid of her yelling. I asked to speak with the store manager, and she refused to call her. I had to call another Dollar Tree in the next town to get in contact with the District Manager, who forced the rude woman to accept the coupons, and the Dist. Mgr appologized. The next day I went back to use more coupons, and had a similar experience with the Store manager, and she told me “You are the woman who tattled on my assistant, so dont expect great service here!” I again contacted the Dist. Mgr, but I have not recieved a return call yet! I am boycotting Dollar Tree now!!!

  • Gi

Is all store accept black and white print coupon?

    • Mary

yes they do, as long as it is legible.

  • Wendy

Does this mean that if an item is $1 and you have a $1/1 mq they will take it even if it makes the item free/

    • Anonymous

Sure does !!!!! Smart for dollar tree cuz they will get paid back in full by the manufactures so they will make out good with us couplers !!!

    • Danielle

      yes. I did it today!

  • Justine

This makes me very happy! 🙂

  • Lisa

I see that there is a limited to internet coupons (only 2 per trans.) what about manuf.??

  • lizv

I don’t like the last rule. I have a feeling it will make for some unpleasant managerial conversations. Sounds very discretionary to me…. ( I guess all store have this but I know here in the Bronx they will be VERY tough with coupons)

  • QponingDiva

I wish Dollar Tree, Walmart, and Target double their coupons.

  • Angie

I went to Dollar Tree this evening. Ready to make a few purchases.
My experience did not go very well. The little guy that checked me out, went to mumbling things when I handed him my coupons and said, “I think we are suppose to scan the coupon first before we scan the items.” I said, “that doesn’t even make any sense.” Then calls for assistance and this girl is complaining about customers lining up, poor management, because no one has trained them on how to accept coupons. She was climbing and jumping over counters and tells me they have not scanned any coupons yet. While doing all this she is looking through my coupons and pulling out ‘extra coupons’??? They do not accept more than one coupon of the same item per transaction. What is that? After a few more comments from the two of them and searching for instructions on how to accept coupons. I asked for my coupons back and said this is ridiculous and left. Now I am venting my experience after thinking about what happened. I will probably go to another location another day. Thanks for the vent.

    • Amy W.

This happened to me too with the manf q’s once. They confuse the one per individual item with one kind of coupon per transaction. They had just started taking coupons at that point and the manager had to explain it several times to the cashier and she still didn’t get it. She was just upset because if she messed up they were going to hold her personally responsible for the mistake.

  • ofis

I went to my store last week about the mfc and the clerk doesn’t know anything about it, she ask her manager and she say yes,the 26th then I overheard one of the employees said: this people the stuff is already a dollar what do they want them free? so I think this is going to be their attitude when I’ll come to shop whit my coupons.

    • Cheri H

Like they make tons of money working there. I’d think they’d be supportive but people these days…

  • jessa

I went other night to look around at what items you can actually use coupons for there. What I found made me happy and little sad. Lol . But if your like me and can’t wait for your local store to roll out a 10 for 10 on tooth paste to get the lowest deals. Dollar tree just made it so there’s no more waiting on that. They have lots of Crest, Colgate and other name brand items of tooth paste to stock up on. I can hardly wait to go clean them out. Mmm well not totally clean I frown on shelf cleaners. I always try to leave enough for someone else to rip the rewards too.

    • Amy W.

Just be sure to check the sizes a lot of them are under 4oz. The store I go to won’t take a toothpaste coupon anymore unless it is the one pictured on the coupon.

  • Bob

I went to purchase two Post Cereals and had 2 different post coupons each for $1 off.

Cashier would only take 1 – she said: We can only take one coupon for the post cereal.

    However their policy states:
Only one (1) manufacturer’s coupon will be accepted per item.

I take that to mean you can’t have two coupons for one item.

Can anyone clarify this for me?

  • Brandi

If your stuck w someone who doesn’t know how to do the coupons tell them to scan your items first, the press F7 then answer no on the screen. I haven’t had any problems in the Dayton Ohio area w the exception of a coupon being $2 off. Can someone clarify this for me. Would they just take $1 off or can they refuse it!?

  • yolene

I went last night for the first time didnt notice it was only 2 internet coupons per order i think that is just crazy i can understand two of each item but two total lucky for me my cashier was nice and rang me up in 7 trans but to buy 17 things that is going to be allot of work if your trying to shop there with internet coupons i also had a hard time with the red at walmart i had to explain for like 15mins that its a man coup still and then manager said ok but that is going to be an issue again am sure I dont really understand myself why they put that red at walmart if its a man coup and can be used anywhere because it makes it very hard to use in other stores but my trip still went well 9 free bacon and 8-red bar single pizza .50 each so paid $4 for $17 worth of food

  • Faith

I tried to use the P&G $3/2 Olay Bar because my store had the bars but they won’t let me use it because it exceeds the value. I thought that they would’ve adjusted the coupon value.

    • Anonymous

My store alowwed me to use that olay coupon but maxed it out at a dollor off two….making them 50 cents a peice…..

  • Rose

I thought this would be great. My dollar store denies every coupon you hand them even though they are legit. They rude about it too.

  • Connie

Last night I decided to go check out my local Dollar Tree store and they would not take my coupons. I had the .75 cents off ANY one Colgate toothpaste 4oz+, but the cashier told me she could not take it since the picture on the coupon did not match the Colgate I was getting. I tried to explain that the coupon was ok because the only restriction it had was the size. She would still not take it. I started laughing and asked for my coupons back. What I joke!!

    • Amy W.

They did the same thing to me

  • elizabeth

Yesterday i went in and i knew exactly what i wanted because i had seen it a day before and i found a $1 coupon for the airwick candle that airwick just came out with. i had 4 coupons so i got 4 candles, once i got to the register she told me i couldnt use them because they were a $1 and the products would be free, i told her sarcasticly ‘thats the point’ she called another cashier over which was of no help then she said yea we cant accept them go and look at the coupon policy online. i left without getting them, and i was heading to my car the same 2nd cashier called out to me ma’am you could use the coupons. i went back and got my way. but none of the cashiers knew how to use the coupons in the transaction. the manager had to come over and teach her. may i point out its been two months since they started accepting coupons and only the manager knows the procedure, very dissapointing. But i will be going back and making sure i get MY way 🙂

  • Leslie

I just left the store on my first trip couponing there. I was told that they could not accept coupons where you had to buy two. I had coupons for .50/2 Lysol toilet Bowl cleaners and one for 1.00/2 werthers caramels. Guess I’ll print the policy and try another store.

    • Anonymous

I experienced the same issue with that they just started accepting coupons and I guess they changed their policy already

      • Anonymous

I had the same problem at the cherry grove location u accept real mg coupons really I thinking why am I try to save money it was a 40 cent off 4 come on now ……

  • Norma

I have had very good luck at Dollar Tree, but that may change. Although, they have not changed the policy on line yet, when the chashier saw that I was going to use coupons, said, “our policy has changed today, and you may not get to use all of the coupons.” Very upsetting, but upon looking at my coupons, I was allowed to use the ones I had. I was told that the coupons that they would stop using were the ones that say buy 2 to save .50 or $1. etc… They took all of my $1. off one allowing me to get the items for free. They have decided to not take the ones where we have to by more than one item to use the coupon. Weird to me, because they would sell us two products and get reimbursed the coupon, but at least we can still use them,

  • Lisa

So why bother taking any dollar off coupon if they won’t take it what’s the point in wasting gas or time whatt a joke i” stick to the stores i know will take my coupons

  • May

Went to my local Dollar Tree Store today to use a $1 off coupon for Maybelline NY Eyeliner or Brow Liner printed from I was told that they had received an email regarding a policy change saying that they can not accept any coupon that states redeemable at another store. I showed the assistant manager that it was a manufacturer’s coupon not a redeemable only at Walmart coupon, but she would not listen just continued to be rude saying we don’t accept them! It is sad that they don’t educate their employees on the coupon policy and worse than that they don’t have customer service skills! What a joke…..

  • Elisa

Can someone please help clarify the coupon policy. I went to my local Dollar tree & had a coupon for $2 off 2 Airwick candles. I went to the register and the cashier yelled & said you can’t use a coupon over a $1. I said the coupon is for $1 off each candle? She says it states it in the coupon policy but I have gone over it and I don’t see anything where it says you can’t use a $2 off coupon just that “Coupons cannot be redeemed for more than the purchase price of the item.” The transaction doesn’t exceed the value of the item so I guess I am a little confused. She even started cussing saying she is sick of dealing with coupons & it is a waste of her time. I ended up paying full price for them because I was so humiliated in front of other customers. Has anyone had any issues with this? Or has anyone used a coupon similar to this and they allowed it? I just want to understand for future trips so I don’t feel like an idiot? Thanks for your help!!!

    • Andrea

That sucks that she was so rude. I’d talk to the manager or something. Anyway she was wrong. After a few back and forth emails with the dollar tree customer service I finally got an answer out of them. They said if you have a coupon for $1.25/1 item you can’t use it but is you have a coupon for like $2/2 items you can use it. Maybe email them and ask them. That way you can print out the email and keep it in your binder or whatever and show the cashier next time.

    • Daphne

You should never buy a product after a sales clerk has tried to humuliate you. If they want to make a scene…I let them…I love to include the manager..then I get everyone’s names and contact corporate…It makes for a great savings later. If a company doesn’t offer you compensation for your inconvience, then they are not a company worth using…..You should never feel badly when a clerk is rude…Instead, Leave your items where they are and take your coupons and leave. They aren’t worth you wasting money on!

    • The Dollar Tree will accept $2.00 coupons but it can only ring them up as a dollar. You cannot get two things for free with a $2.00 coupon. Good grief, it’s a dollar store. Have some pride. How do you think that the store can afford to sell items for $1.00? If it gives everything away to sick hoarders there goes the store. Why don’t you greedy people go somewhere else and leave us alone?

      • Amanda

If you reread Elisa’s initial comment, it states the coupon is for $2 off 2 products, so it CAN be used. The store isn’t “giving things away” when someone uses coupons. They are reimbursed by the manufacturer for the value of the coupon, plus shipping. Perhaps you should educate yourself before you start insulting people.

      • Elisa

@Spider… If you actually read my comment correctly then you would know, the coupon I was talking about was a coupon for two products not one. The store does not lose out on money like Amanda said, they are reimbursed. I am not greedy nor am I a “Sick Hoarder.” I am a 25 year old college student that not only coupons to put food on my table but I also donate 3/4’s of my stock pile to local shelters in my area during the holidays. I asked a simple question and you feel it is necessary to make assumptions about me when you know nothing about me. Lately all I have seen on coupon blogs is negativity around couponers and it is just plain sad…

  • Stephanie

I just left dollar tree totally disgusted. I was one of the first customers in my area to go to the dollar tree in August with my coupons and they were on a learning curve but did it fine. For some reason today the new manager was called and I was told I can only use coupons that are up to 99 cents. I said no, actually I can only use to the value of the item which is $1.00 and my coupon is for $1.00. She told me no and walked away. So I had to have the guy take out all the items that were $1.00 and only ended up being “allowed” to use my $1.50 off of two hefty sandwich bags. I was so disgusted with not only the tone but the treatment, I have written to the customer service of Dollar tree with the number of the store.
Just to feel better, I went to my rite aid and not only was the clerk sweet, she actually encouraged me to keep doing my couponing!

  • I was at my Dollar Tree today and the store manger told me they updated their policy to accept BOGO and over 2.00 coupons. He said the email was distibuted this past friday. I’m looking into it but I’m sure he’s was not kidding

  • dawn

i have stopped trying to use coupons at dollar tree. clearly they are not educated on their own policy, there is an issue EVERY time i try. Just this past week ANOTHER issue , i had 1.50 off 2 ANY hefty bags, i was told that those were not accepted. In stead of arguing the point i just left my carriage where it was and left for the last time. Just not worth the aggravation.

  • Cha

I haven’t been denied using any coupons at Dollar Tree yet but is a pain in the behind sometimes as they scrutinize them as if you handed over $500 bill and then none of them seem to know how to enter them. I’ll continue to use them though because I want the savings.

    • Cha

Spoke too soon. Went this morning to use a coupon that was $3.00/2 items and was told they cannot accept any coupon over $1. I had them void the items and was on my merry way the rest of my stuff. I didn’t need the items, if I could get them free, great. If not, oh well.

    • Melissa

I just had the same issue yesterday the first time to try and coupon at our Dollar Tree. First, I could only use two. Then we sat there for 10 minutes over whether chicken noodle soup can was condensed when it specifically says “condensed”. She was reading other parts of the coupon trying NOT to use it. The line backed up and the lady behind me was very upset at the CSR checking us out. This is not worth the hassle.

  • erica

So if I print the coupons off line I can only use 2 a day at dollar tree even if they r the same ones that were in paper

  • bandollartree

wooster ohio dollar tree refuses to honor coupon policy & manager (& a few cashiers) are very rude. they refuse to accept any coupon for over $1 ($2/1), refuse $3/3, refuse to accept coupons that expire that same day. also, the manager pulls any item that has a coupon matchup – even if it’s in the weekly sales ad. “oh we must be out of that” is the response I was given.. if all of these dollar tree stores have so many different accepted policies, then why isn’t that posted for each individual store? BECAUSE IT’S ONE CHAIN THAT HAS HATEFUL MORONIC EMPLOYEES!
