CVS Digital Receipt

The new CVS digital receipt program was officially announced today following a late night appearance by CEO Helena Foulkes on Jimmy Kimmel Live last Thursday. Foulkes, who made her very real announcement as part of Kimmel’s gag-campaign for Vice President, issued the following statement earlier today,

We heard loud and clear that while our customers love receiving coupons and special offers, many wanted a paperless option. This feature lets our customers continue to make personalized choices as to how they engage with us, and will let our members choose to say ‘So long!’ to the long paper receipts at check-out.

The new CVS digital receipt option is available to the over 70 million customers participating in the CVS ExtraCare Rewards program. According to the official press release, ExtraCare members can opt out of paper receipts online through their membership portal. This one-time action will still allow them to reap the benefits (and receive the coupons) associated with ExtraCare membership, they will simply redeem them by accessing deals through a smartphone, tablet, or computer. Alternately, customers can request a printed receipt at the time of purchase.

In fact, using the CVS pharmacy app not only allows customers to save trees, it ensures that ExtraCare Rewards and coupons are easy to access, and hard to forget at home or in the car.

The move to the new CVS digital receipt significantly reduce the paper used to print receipts, which can be upwards of 2-3 feet long on a single-item purchase. Program rollouts begin next month and Foulkes expects the complete rollover to happen by the end of June.
